Running In Why/How

Posted by: Dalamtian on 22 August 2018

Having just bought a Naim Nova I understand that it needs running in for a considerable time, I set it up yesterday and this morning, it’s already sounding better after having it on all night. The question is how/why does it make such a difference when there are no moving parts, is it heat related?

I have always found this makes a huge difference with Naim equipment.

The initial change (the first few hours max) has a heat element to it, after that it's the stabilisation of certain electronic and electrical components as they settle in to their running conditions; this is primarily due to small changes in the electrolytic capacitors and the mains transformer.

The black box spends a certain amount of time deciding if it likes you or not......

Naim - usually use fairly large hi grade capacitors also there are usually a smattering of tantalum capacitors in key critical circuits - all of which take time to settle - particularly the tantalum capacitors. If you switch off your unit - once run in ........ it could take a couple of days for it to reach full sound quality. Consequently allot of Naimites - leave their units powered up ( I await to be shot to pieces now!)

Seems like the Naim app is pretty anti-social and doesn't really like anyone then!

My first Nova must have hated me as it committed suicide!

Hmm. I could associate suicide to Japanese amps, but not British ...

Richiero, I agree with you. Another good reason to keep certain sensitive electronic appliances such as Naim equipment and perhaps computers permanently on is that you are not stressing components and joints with constant contraction and expansion. Yes I know it's not completely green but I think Naim are working on this aspect. Rich

I've left my Nova burning in on Radio Paradise while I'm at work, wondering now if its such a good idea to leave it on and unattended

One of the plus points for me with Naim boxes is that they are too heavy for me to just throw out of the window????

I bought an ex demo 250-2 a while ago. It was turned off, boxed up and carried home bungeed on the back of a Moto Guzzi. Sounded great when first connected up but the next day is was dull and not worth listening to, the day after it had recovered. I've also had speakers sound crap after being disturbed by laying them on their sides to attach outriggers to the bottom but that might have been the Herbies gliders (put under them to try and reduce the neighbour nuisance from the flat below) settling in as they were new.

By neighbour nuisance I mean when the blighters complain, it can be highly irritating when you're trying to enjoy some music.

Yep a 13k streamer plus 7k PSU controlled by a two bob application especially on Android.

I would not do it

Risk of fire etc if bad luck, just turn it off at night or when not at home, give it some time playing everyday and it will surely come on song. Some would point out climate issue too.

Naim seem to have changed or bypassed some quality check, judging on many reported issues of new range, I would not dare trusting current electronics not to fail when out

I  had my Olive amplication and CD on 24/7 way back, then it was ready instant, later I found I could turn off the poweramp as this wasn't that long to warm up. Now I just turn everything on when home and before serious listening or in the morning for radio background, its mighty fine and my hearing is no longer as it was two decades ago, everything is turned off when not in use or out.

When the forum visited Naim we were introduced to the newly hired App specialists and encouraged to share our experiences. It will improve, and with Naim take some time until they are happy to release updates.

When first initialising the running in on a new device, you should have first switch on a day after a new moon. Preferably on a Monday and a month with an R in it. Have the transformers axis facing true north.   Don't run in when Mercury is retrograde or it'll end in tears.

You tell me this now! I’m on my second Nova!
