Isolation Plinth for Uniti Star

Posted by: GregWPGibbs on 22 August 2018

My Uniti Star currently sits on a fairly solid, oak cabinet and sounds pretty good playing through Kudos C20s. As the Wife has ruled out replacing the cabinet with a dedicated rack on aesthetic grounds and I feel a Fraim would be a bit over the top with my modest setup, I’ve been looking at isolation platforms to sit betwixt Uniti and cabinet.

I’ve tried a cheap-ish acrylic / sorbothane solution but found that (1) it had little or no effect sonically and (2) due to the uneven weight distribution of the Uniti, it did not sit level (requiring additional support on the right).

I’ve recently spotted a possible solution on eBay from a guy who sells a range of “Naim Fraim styled” (his words not mine) racks. He has recently introduced a spiked wooden plinth with a glass shelf above it siting on 3 ball bearings.

Although they guy doesn’t accept returns, they are quite reasonably priced, so I’m tempted to give it a punt. But, before I do, I wonder if anyone has any experience of this sort of thing and what (if any difference) it is likely to make to the sound.

I’ve looked at those and for an experiment I put three Michell cones under my nova with one under the transformer and two at the front and it made a noticeable difference to the sound stage in terms of openness.

I have doubts about the "Naim styled" thing... there are quite a few reliable manufacturers that make decent isolation platforms (Hifi Racks, Avid, Audiophile Base, etc.).

You could try a Naim Fraim specification piece of glass, supported by the Fraim balls and cups, which would work well and look pretty discreet. I use a Quadraspire bamboo rack and it’s very good; they also make an isolation shelf with little feet, which I’d expect to be pretty good as well - it certainly looks nice. It would be a far safer bet that something knocked up in someone’s shed and flogged cheap on eBay.

If this is the ebay seller I think it is, he appeared on the forum a couple of years ago, claiming to be an amateur cabinet maker looking for advice for a DIY project. His design was taken very much from forum members advice, and as soon as he had the info he wanted, he went into production, and has been selling on ebay ever since. I thought it was a bit of a cheek, and strictly speaking, he is clearly a business seller, which means that not accepting returns is illegal.

Cheers for all the feedback - it looks like I need to do further research on the subject.

On my Nova o bought 3x Naim cups and balls, at the moment directly under the Nova and s great improvement.

Glass I never got round to, a local glass merchant has promised a piece to Naim spec, but still waiting.

I’m intrigued! Could someone please enlighten me as to what “Naim spec glass” is and how it differs from standard tempered glass ?

Naim Spec just means that the glass is the same sizes that Naim uses.I ordered a Full Fraim base from Naim, which comes with glass. Then I went to my local glass store, had them make me four more pieces to the same sizes, tempered, beveled edges...and they look identical.I converted four Fraimlite shelves into Full Fraim, including machining the sides away to match Full Fraim shelves,I also added the recesses in the shelves for the cups to sit in,and the .250 hole, that acts as a stopper for the glass. I had all the shelves professionally painted black, and it all looks and sounds wonderful.

Search the forum it's just the type of glass and measurements without Naim quality control (tapping), if your after the same a dealer can provide for circa £200.

There also the Custom Design’s iRAP platform. A damped metal polymer which sits on 3 or 4 balls into metal feet, using the same approach as Naim. About £120 for a 430 x 380 shelf, but they do different sizes.

The iRAP looks a pretty good buy for the money. I have my TV on one of their stands and it looks good and is well made with very nice cherry wood end panels.

Just looked at them...No idea of the quality or how good they are, but I have to say it looks quite nice.

However, if the unit arrived damaged, the no returns policy would be disastrous!

I just went to Ikea

Bought myself a bamboo cutting board at around €12-15

Paint it whatever colour or leave it as is

Put small hard rubber dots below or whatever suit you

If not satisfied, no real loss as you can reverse the cutting board to kitchen

Another option is to get a marble kitchen chopping board (say £20), and put sorbothane balls under it. Gives a stable platform that is heat resistant and isolated from furniture below. Can change colour of board if get bored !

How about Quadraspire QPlus Advanced feet. And their site even shows them used under an NDX!

I have Naim spec glass with Naim cups and balls under all of my components but that is on a rack. I have a friend who uses Black Ravioli under his speakers and is about to try it under his Uniti 2.

Would a turntable wall shelf be possible?

You can buy from dealers so the no returns policy would not apply.

Morning Gazza...I was referring to the guy that sells “Naim Fraim styled” on Ebay, were you?

Posted on: 24 August 2018 by Gazza

Oh sorry I was referring to the custom design Irap mentioned. Yes, buyer beware on the “bay” as you reported
