CDX2
Posted by: docmark on 25 August 2018
Hello - I just searched the forums and didn't find an answer, so here goes. I just purchased a CDX2 second hand from my dealer. It's a version one - no digital out. I was told by the dealer that, a while back, the transport had actually been replaced with a newer one, because the original owner was afraid of transport failure. It actually sounds quite good. Of course, I'm looking to improve on that. Is an upgrade to a unit with digital out possible? I would then pair it with my DAVE dac. Or, failing that, would it be better to get a Super Lumina DIN cable and connect it to my 272?

It’s only been hooked up for 48 hrs..... but I think I’m hooked.....
Maybe test on something different than string quartets?
:-)

I’ve been listening to the solo recorder recital .....

Are you placing your CDX2 on a Fraim? It’s incredible isn’t it?. it some how transforms the CDP...in my experience definitely the best upgrade you can give the CDX2.. closely followed by DIN Hiline
Yes, my cdx2 is on Naim Full fraim....it took me sometime to convince myself to buy the fraim, especially as I needed two racks... but I do feel now it’s worth every penny ....
as for the cdx2 with the 552 it could well be the case it sounds better bare..... ?? Personally I have not heard the partnership......

Lovely. Checkout the 'Loeki Stardust Quartet' ( no joke here ). I also like Heiko ter Schegget playing music by Jacob van Eijk. You cant get more Dutch - both by the names and the music.

I’m not actually listening to the Solo recorder recital..... but will check out your recommendations
My dealer is ordering a Super Lumina DIN cable for me. He's getting it from Montreal - hopefully it will be here soon. I'm looking forward to a sonic improvement. Next piece of gear will be a power supply for the CDX2.
And don’t forget the Fraim.. possibly the most important upgrade of them all with the CDX2. Also don’t forget to check the puck.. gently make sure the rubber bands are well looped out.. again provides a worthwhile improvement in sound with more weight, breathability and flow... kind of like the effect from Fraim... so I guess it might partly be down to reducing micro vibrations of the disc etc.
As I understand it, the OP has his Naim boxes stacked one on top of the other, with isolating feet between them.

Interesting. On another thread I was explicitly advised against this.

When I had an CDX2 I found that adding an XPS was a most effective upgrade, It really was a night & day difference. I know one (or maybe two) people don't agree, but they are in the minority & for the life of me I could never understand what was not to like. I suspect any changes you might get with the SL DIN will be as nothing compared to an XPS. I know what I would buy first.
Completely agree with the above! A SL cable would certainly not get a look in..... i prefer the standard lavender interconnect for a start. XPS2 every time for me, and actually i liked the 555PS even more on the CDX2. Conversely, i still prefer the XPS2 on my CDS3.
When I moved the CDX2 out of the main system and down to the second home I bought it a full Fraim shelf, the rest of the system is on surplus Fraim Lite and not a 555ps, hi or powerline anywhere near it despite having both the latter available (the 555ps has a higher calling now of course).
HH, always a delight to hear from a curmudgeonly old man and his stereo shelves. As I've patiently explained to you on several occasions, I currently don't have room for a Fraim system. However, that hasn't stopped me from buying several pieces of Naim gear, nor will it stop me from buying more. I also have a DAVE DAC - blows Naim out of the water. i purchase what I like & what sounds good to me. And when I do have room for proper shelving, will I buy Naim? Maybe, maybe not. I happen to like Naim, but there's lots of good non-Naim equipment out there. As for the SL DIN cable, i got it for 20% off, time-limited offer. And I'm a big believer in cables - the original cable supplied with a piece of Naim equipment is rarely as good as after-market cables, for example, my Siltech BNC cable connecting my Core to the DAVE DAC. As for the isolation feet between components, they're beautifully made, expensive, and sound (or rather don't sound) great. And with time, they'll be replaced.

OMG! Is he also a communist?
If you do not have the space for a rack and many of us don't then getting some level of separation between the boxes is a sensible idea and as always if it sounds great to you then it sounds great.
