Second Hand Naim

Posted by: Praggers on 29 August 2018

Can I please get some advice on buying second hand Naim.

I’m looking at pre/power/psu but nothing over 5 years old.

I can possibly buy one of them new so what would that be? I was thinking it best to buy the pre amp new and the power/psu used.

Any do’s and dont’s??

Electronics are a pretty safet bet buying used on e-bay and other used sites (just use common sense re: scams).  Speakers - maybe.  Turntables and arms - no, go to a dealer.  And never, ever, buy used cartridges!

I have bought and sold a lot of used cartridges and have only bought one real dud I paid £150 for a Mk1 ATOC9 which wore out after a couple of months apart from that amongst others I've bought a Dynavector 10x5 for £125 used it for over a year and sold it on to a very happy customer for £125. I paid £325 for a used Benz Micro SL used it for about 6 months and sold it for £300 and I took that £300 added £150 and bought an ex demo Dynavector 20x2L which was like new.

As long as you are careful you can buy used cartridges quite safely on various used hifi sites and also eBay you are protected very well on eBay as a buyer when you buy a cartridge either examine it yourself with a usb camera or a jewellers loupe and if your unsure take it to your local dealer to take a look.

I normally buy secondhand and use dealers that I can get to visit. My last buy was a non Naim dealer that took a NAP 250.2 in as part of a deal. I was nervous but had an audition and it all went well. However, at the same time I found a number of NAP 300s being offered in Italy at 250 money. It was tempting but there was just something odd about the locations; all up in mountain villages and hard to get to. Of course, I might have missed the bargain of the century.....or avoided mail ordering a couple of house bricks. At the money involved with Naim gear then you need some peace of mind and confidence before you part with money.
