Update to the 272

Posted by: Richard Choong on 29 August 2018

Asking for a friend. Is there any news out there that the 272 will be updated to bring it in line with the other current streamers like the Nova or ND 555 or NDX2?

Naim haven’t made any announcements about it yet. It does seem inevitable that they will update it, but they will say nothing until they are ready to release it.

Even though nobody knows, but with the experience of the Unity launch, and even with the much better launch of the nd555 I am sure we ewill not see anything new in terms of preamp/dac/streamer or  all in one unit, before all new streamers are released  and the demand for units met. Another really interesting thing is what will Naim use  as the main dac chip da converter. Something new must happen since the old chips are kept for repairs of the new streamers and older digital models.

I would imagine it would be a heavily modified NDX2 with the TI 1792a chipset.

An updated 272 that would be a heavily modified NDX2 with the TI 1792a chipset would probably cost about £6,000 almost double the cost of the 272 when it was released. Add to that a psu 555DR and all of a sudden you have a £12,000 - 13,000 streaming pre.

I really hope Naim will produce a pre with integrated Dac as an upgrade to the Ndac, that I am told  is discontinued,  for all of us that do not need all the analogue connections in the current line of preamps. This could be a good adition to the streamers. Hopefully a box that requires a seperate psu at the 252 level. I have had my 252 service so I can wait a few years for such a device.

But how long will it remain there.

I know of one Naim dealer that is selling his demonstation unit on a well know auction site.

naim products do not follow Iphone like annual product cycles.

They have not been selling for quite a while.....my dealer has not had a sale for a couple of years. It’s either dead or a new one is in the future tbd.

Perhaps because they don't make mobile phones (yet)

That would be hard, as he died in 2012.

Hang on Fatcat,  sale of ex-dem equipment happens regularly, it's no indicator of a product's longevity.  Some of my stuff is 'ex-dem', including my NAC N272 which I may have mentioned in another thread performed brilliantly in place of my NAC552 while that was being DR'd.  I see no logical reason for supposing the 272 would be 'updated' any time soon, either for SQ or financial reasons.

Wait a minute, my dealer is banging out  selling NDX's at knock down prices... this is an indicator of the product's longevity (or shortevity in this case).

I can see no logical reason why it wouldn't. Why would Naim want all the hassle of supporting a streaming platform and keeping it up to date and functional just to keep a single product going? Naim clearly intend the new platform to sound better, and only having to support and develop a single platform for all streamers must surely give a cost saving.

I’m pretty certain it’s your dealer selling the NdaC. He’s also selling other superseded equipment at very, very reasonable prices.

An indication the new gear is far superior or/and he seriously overstocked the old gear.

I’m a big fan of chord DACS but I’m tempted by this particular Ndac and Ndx

On their way out or not they still sound FANTASTIC

I think the 272 will go in a year or two and not be replaced.

Thats why I bought one also I wanted the “ T “ with the FM tuner. I bet this product cuts into the market off too many other boxes and that won’t please the bean counters at Naim HQ

Posted on: 31 August 2018 by analogmusic

yes I agree the 272 may never be upgraded...

Posted on: 31 August 2018 by Bob the Builder

I suspect that the 272 will be discontinued and I think it's inability to be upgraded in any way other than a power supply will be it's downfall. There are many 272's on the used market now which is usually a sign for such a new product that it has had it's day im market terms and so unless a '372' is radically different to a 272 I can't see Naim investing in the development of a 272-2 but I may well be talking ****

This type of technology develops and improves so quickly that having a product that cannot be upgraded either ny Naim themselves or with another brands products was a bit short sighted of Naim.

Posted on: 31 August 2018 by hungryhalibut

When I visited Naim a few months ago I asked about the future for streaming preamps and the response was that they were doing the stand alone streamers first, which I took to mean that a replacement will follow in due course. Whether it’s a direct replacement or something at a higher level I’ve no idea, but I’m saving my pennies just in case.

272 disappeared for naim website so presumably replacement out soon....

Posted on: 02 September 2018 by hungryhalibut

The 272 is very much alive on the website. In fact, it’s what Naim have chosen as the example of the Classic Series on the first page. If a replacement comes, it will be after the ND5XS2 is released later in the year.
