SL2s Coming!

Posted by: Gavin B on 31 August 2018

Hi All

Following a bit of good timing, I'm shortly to become the new owner of a pre-loved pair of SL2s. I'm picking them up this coming weekend.

I've read the thread of set-up tips from Richard D. et al, and whilst I'm happy to give it a go, it's a bit daunting.

I'd like to explore another avenue - getting someone to come in to help me with the set-up. This could be a dealer or an experienced individual. Obviously, this is likely to be a service I pay for, and I'm happy to do so, but the difficulty is finding that person. I don't have a relationship with a local dealer (not since the demise of Sound Advice etc. in Loughborough), and my previous purchases (olive to black system swap, quite a few years ago) have been through the renowned St. Albans-base dealer.

So, are you aware of someone offering this service, or willing to help me with the set-up? I'm based near Tamworth in the Midlands.

I'm looking forward to getting them set up, but it might not be immediately - the front room is piled high with stuff from another room we're busy decorating.

Thanks

Gavin

The way round that, of course, is for Naim to continue to make SL2s. If anyone wants a pair of these wonderful speakers the only option is to buy secondhand. I very much hope that whatever has broken is easily fixable. There are some incredible adhesives around that could fix any cabinet damage, though it looks as if the bolt and fixing need to be removed, which will presumably will mean taking the driver out to see what is what. Sounds like a job for Jason.

If it's just an over tightened threaded insert this (should in theory) be easily replaceable, perhaps Naim still have them in stock.

Personally I would have (which is what I did with mine) just set them up first and got the tweeter assembly central and lined up before checking bolts on the drivers were torqued correctly.  Unless they'd been removed since the time of manufacture it's fairly unlikely they'd be loose or require adjustment.  They're well screwed together and the drivers on some Naim speakers are also semi bonded in place (SBL's) so the vibration wouldn't reach such a point where it would work driver bolts loose (in my experience).  Furthermore whilst the importance of set up is not to be overlooked, increasing the torque of a bolt by a fraction of a Nm is not going to alter the sound, it would only be if the driver was loose in it's location that you would notice a detrimental effect.  Sometimes worrying too much ends up causing you problems, we've all been there, me included!

Hopefully you can get them set up well, the results will be worth it, mine sound fantastic.  I think you can download the instructions somewhere online if you do a search, which helps you understand the assembly process and how they should be placed etc.

I wouldn’t think it would be to hard to remove a broken bolt. Drill, tap it remove it. Problem would be why is it broken? 3.6 nm not 36nm? Lol
