Crackling FLAC files!

Posted by: ursus262 on 02 September 2018

Good afternoon everyone.

Has anyone ever experienced crackling on 24-bit FLAC files?  I bought a recording yesterday and downloaded it and it's almost unplayable.  Some tracks are OK, others not so.  I have done two things -

It would appear to me that the files are corrupt.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what to do next?  I've informed the supplier (Presto Classical) and am waiting to hear from them.

Maybe they've worked out how to make digital sound more analogue?

Oh, it sounds that alright - and not in a good way either

Yep, it’s called using a DAC...

I notice that someone has moved my post.  No wonder I couldn't find it!  I didn't think this was a streaming issue.

Have you tried re-dwonloading the files? Could have been corrupted in the original downloading process?

Whenever I've come across this previously I've had to re-rip the relevant CD.

Not sure from your original post how bad the crackling is.

What makes you think the original source is not a crackly vinyl record as shock horror not unknown for 24-bit to be ‘remastered’ from vinyl.

I thought you might get better responses from the Streaming Audio forum, as this is where most enquiries regarding downloading and streaming issues reside.

I would try another download.  If it's the same then there may be an issue with the original file, in which case you should take it up with the file seller/supplier.

This is interesting. It's just happened to me for the very first time with a 192/24 download of Mahler's 9th symphony. I've been listening to the last movement and there are loud crackles in two loud sections, when playing through my Nova from a QNAP NAS. I've never experienced that before—including with any similar high resolution downloads.

I've yet to listen on other devices to which I've transferred the files (including my Astell & Kern Kann) to see if it's unqiue to the Nova or whether the problem exists on the other devices as well.

With apologies for posting so soon after my previous post, I can report that the file produces the same crackles when playing on my Astell & Kern Kann—which strongly suggests a problem with the file rather than with the Nova. I'm in touch with the Channel Classics site accordingly.

Interestingly, the file passed thorugh the Yate Audio File Health Check App with flying colours.

Gentlemen

I emailed Presto Classical and had a very prompt reply from them.  They replaced the files at their end, which I re-downloaded and everything is perfect.  In fact the sound quality is better, which makes me think that there were some errors introduced during the transcoding from the WAVs.  However, all is now resolved.  Thank you all for your advice and I hope this helps others who have a similar problem in the future.

Channel Classics has also "come good". They apparently had a problem with some new software they were using to create pcm files from the DSD masters and are re-processing the relevant albums.

The moral of this thread appears to be, "If you suffer from a crackly FLAC, send it back"!
