Audio Show East

Posted by: Gazza on 14 September 2018

For those interested Audio show east is Nov 2nd and 3 rd which is only a few weeks away if those that live outside of the east Anglia want and need to plan a trip. I am sure Richard and Signals will post something pretty soon, but those interested can look at the Signals site for the latest exhibitors. I thoroughly enjoyed it last year...others who have been to the big events are better able to compare. And it’s free....voluntary charity contribution last year. Anyway, more for those who would have to plan a trip.

Simply being happy is one of life's options, PB.

As for fixed playlists, I recall considering that many shows ago.  The rooms are run by the guys in them and their responsiveness to what people want to play is a key part of the proceedings. It's an interactive process and its part of what keeps it relaxed and informal.

We would never get the play list right anyway.

PB, sorry did not meet. The Dynaudio room was never at 12 o,clock each time I visited which might explain a somewhat up and down review by myself and others?

The PMC showed aspects of effortless music, but in contrast to the Dynaudio room which had a £60k front end, they had a £15k Bryston preamp/ streamer and monoblocs. I think Signals will run in their pair ( different ones to the show) and then set up an evening with the Naim Statement amps. This was always the plan for the show, but PMC had not heard the Naim Amps with their new speakers.

Never been a Chord fan, but the new small in physical size amp with Dave and ATC and upscaler sounded pretty good.

I actually liked most of the music I heard, and had a long chat with !ike at Naim about this. They had demoed the ND555 a couple of times to me and I really struggled to enjoy the product, it was more luck and perseverance on my part that I ended up with one. Music is a difficult one, but I would agree at least play some music that people would have at least heard.

Hi Gazza,  Maybe next year we can meet and have a chat. Speakers polarise opinions like no other product and its great to read other peoples opinions. Those Dynaudio's were certainly power hungry and the Stevie Ray Vaughn track needs to be played as loud as possible. For me, there were other issues going on in the room, I heard three different presentations, on the final listening a second 555PSU had been added  and it reminded me as to why I only use one 555 PSU.

As for the ND555, I remain undecided, I am yet to hear a streamer that I would be willing to let my CD555 or Roksan TMS go for. Its very much a case of it aint broke, so why fix it. I have Vangelis playing on my CD555, 552, 500, Kudos 808 system and there is really nothing I would want to change, it really is sublime

PB....I was coming from a Nova/300, not anything like your system. If it’s still doing it for you ( would for me ) then there are other ways of spending that money. Wish I had heard SRV, it was more folk each time like  Joni Mitchell, nice, but left feeling I was missing something.

Fair point Alistair, I guess it would be boring if they all played the same and I guess my musical preferences would destroy the show

Hi PB, a pleasure to catch with you, Karen and the photos yesterday.

re the PMC Fenestria monsters, I heard them a week or so ago on the end of a Melco server, Chord mscaler, DAVE and a pair of giant Chord monoblock powerstations. In that system, in that room on that day, the Fenestrias sounded very different.  Effortlessly deep, dynamic, pistonic basslines that started and stopped on the head of a pin (when appropriate) and a midrange clarity to die for - I've only ever heard Naim DBLs do this before.  Voices sounded startlingly clear and lifelike.  If anything, they were slightly mid forward in that demonstration.

Having heard both installations in a week, I came away with the impression that the Fenestrias were being a ruthlessly revealing window into the strengths and limitations of the Bryston electronics, rather than overlaying their own character on the sound.  I guess that's the thing with top end speakers; you had better feed them well or else beware the consequences.

Today I have had the opportunity to install and play with the new toys that Alastair has kindly obtained for me.  I have asked Richard Dane to re-open a closed thread, so that I can post my impressions and pictures on that one, rather than open up another new thread.  Suffice to say that early impressions are "oh my goodness" favourable.

Best regards, FT

Hello FT,

that just says to me that the most important aspect is system synergy. All we could hear yesterday were the systems on offer.

I do not doubt that the big PMC’s would have sounded better with better amplification and I don’t doubt that the big Dynaudios would have sounded better with amps capable of supplying more current, a big Krell or something similar.

l also recall many good sessions with the Naim DBL’s, they were probably the best speakers I have heard, huge dynamic with great detail and a sublime mid range. Tony M’s active DBL system is simply magnificent. I did consider DBL’s here but they wouldn’t suit my room and I doubt Karen could cope with their looks, but speakers like everything else moves on and the legend of the DBL will go on for a long time to come.

i look forward to comments on your new toys elsewhere,

kind regards

PB

Synergy is everything and I can recal. Hearing some big PMCs at Whittllebhry and didn’t work there either.

What are you up to FT?

Indeed I’ve had one visit from the team A&A and separate visits by each A to Dublin. Wonderful guys, I hope to make it over to next year’s bash.

Would be good to meet up next year, I did wonder if it was you they visited, but as ever they are professional, fun, but discrete. They really must like Guinness from the homeland ????

Hi Dustysox,

You mention Massive Attack in the Dynaudio room.  When I was in that room I managed to get hold of the iPad and put on Blue Lines, was that the track you heard, if so we were probably listening at the same time.  It was awesome, I have never heard it sounding anything like that before and inspired me to put it on when I go back home.

Tony

Quite possibly Tony, i was really enjoying your DJ set!! I was very impressed with the Dynaudio speakers.

I don't recall Massive Attack, it was Stevie Ray Vaughn and some wailing woman when Dusty sat next to me, the latter being painful!

What, when I sat next to you...painful....I get that a lot
