NAP 250 DR, with PMC twenty5 26 speakers
Posted by: Meerkat on 18 September 2018
Hi everyone...Is a NAP 250 DR powerful enough to comfortably drive PMC twenty5 26 speakers?
I was informed, that on a rare occasion, if driven at high levels for a long period, the NAP 250 DR has been known to shut down and go into safety mode. Has anyone come across this before?
Thanks
Hi there,
I have twenty 26's with the 250 and once it has indeed shut down. It was getting pushed hard for a couple of hours or so.
Hasn't happened since as I keep an eye on temperature. They do work very well together though. It is a sound I like and chose those speakers over others I auditioned.
David
As I understand it the shutting down problem is solved with the DR version of the 250.

Lindsay

Hi Lindsay...It was the DR version.

Hi David...Probably doesn't make much difference, but my one's (when I pick them up tomorrow) are the twenty5 26s.
When you say pushed hard, what volume are we speaking about? Depending on the recording, I used to have my SuperNait on about '9 o'clock', occasionally '10 o'clock' if the recording was low.
I used a NAP250 dr on PMC25.26..... I normally listen at about 60 on the Nova amp setting/screen. Never had a problem even in hot weather.
Hoping for the 250DR and 25.26 owners to reply: have you tried 300, 300DR or even 500DR in your system and concluded 250DR is enough? Having nothing else to compare it with, makes me wonder whether 250DR is indeed enough.

Morning Dan...Funnily enough, I am making enquiries this morning regarding a 300DR.
Trouble is, at the moment I can only afford the 300DR, not the 252 and the SuperCap DR needed to go with it. Or, can I get by with a 282?
My humble Unitiqute drives a pair of OB1 i's, which was/is the model before the 20.26 came out (same spec, 86dB 8Ω) to uncomfortable loud levels. Without shutting down. Okay my room is small ish at 4x4 meter and I am about 2.5 meter from the speakers.
I don't know how loud you guys want to go but you can use this site here to calculate what kind of dB level you can expect with a NAP 250. It will blow your eardrums !! In my case if the Qute outputs 20 Watt's I am getting 97dB, which is very loud I tell you.
So I would not worry Meerkat. A 250DR is more than powerful enough for the gorgeous 25.26
Are you interested in 25.26 because you can afford them or because you really have the room for it? I budgeted for 25.26 which my dealer assured me was fine with a NAP250DR. However, they also steered me away. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. I have a pretty large room but went for the 25.23 instead and indeed, anything bigger would have pushed my room over the top.
I have Nova, Nap 250 DR and Twenty5 26. No problem with volume/loudness, unless you are deaf - pardon !
Clint...I thought the Nova had a built in amp?

My room isn't that big 15'6" x 11'3. Looks like I've stuffed up, as I bought them yesterday and will collect them today.
The room that I demoed them in was smaller than mine, and they sounded great.
Currently, using Nova pre amp section to feed 250 DR. I'm patiently waiting for the N272 replacement, with updated streaming board. I could buy a N272 now, but I believe the re-sale price will plummet, when the updated N272 is released, hopefully next year. Your room dimensions are very similar to mine, hence, you should have no problems with the 250 driving the Twenty5 26 to your required volume and hopefully the speakers will integrate nicely into your room - sit back and enjoy
That’s exactly why I bought my Nova, and got a nice deal with my ND555 and preamp etc. Good luck when the updated 272 is launched.

If you don't have a spung floor and the walls are load bearing, you might get away with it. Fingers crossed for you.
Solid floor, brick and cavity walls.

Good man!
I do have wooden floor (joists and floorboards) and all walls are brick and load bearing. The ceiling is just over 9 ft. high and there is a large bay window. The floor is carpeted, walls are plaster finish and two large settees and 55" Oled also in the room, with open gas fire. I did not find much difficulty in having to place the speakers. When I bought the Nova, I also purchased a pair of PMC Twenty5 23's at the same time. I only bought the Twenty5 26, due to being a exceptional pair at great price. I wanted a 3 design, after previously having a pair of ATC SCM40 Mk2. I prefer the PMC sound to the ATC's in the room. If the Twenty5 26 had not become available, I could have happily lived with the 23's.
Having enough power and grip from a beefier amp has little to do with how loud a speaker can be driven. I'm sure an XS can make these speakers scream, but maybe a 300DR or even a 500DR (as opposed to the 250DR) would have the additional juice and refinement to make these speakers really sing.
Yes, very true. Specifications of an amplifier do not tell whole story. For instance I had a Krell s-300i, which is rated at 150W into 8 ohms. Now with a pair of Acoustic Energy Reference 1’s, a good match. However, when I changed to ATC SCM40 mk2, the Krell could drive them loud, but could not drive the bass unit of the speakers. Change amplifier for ATC P1, same output power specification as Krell - 150W into 8 ohms - audio nirvana restored. So, even though the Nap 300 and Nap 500 are better amplifiers then the Nap 250 DR, it does not necessarily mean that in OP, that they will be better in his system and listening environment. As stated previously, I have same speakers near identical room dimensions as the OP, but to step up from the Nap 250 DR could be a step backwards.

I picked up mine tonight, they sit in their boxes until tomorrow. They are ex demo (Diamond Black), and I got them for a very, very good price. They are immaculate, unlike another pair that I nearly bought, with slight scratches and a hole in one of the grills.
I listened to them again tonight at the dealer, and they sounded just as wonderful as they did last week, at a different dealer. Even though it was a different style of room, they were still spot on!
I really hope you enjoy them, when you unpack tomorrow. ???? Are you going to use Nap 250 or Nap 300 ?
Speakers are so personal I listened to Neat, Kudos, Russell K , the PMC did it for me immediately. For others it will be different speakers, and that’s OK too.
Gazza, it’s what you call “different strokes for different folks”
Yep, totally agree
