NDX 2 Random Play

Posted by: Naimtec on 18 September 2018

I have had my NDX for over 4 years and have been very happy with the performance.

The music is on a QNAP NAS approx 1300 cd’s and played via MinimServer.

I have found that about 80% of the time I listen to music I set the NDX to play in random order.

I initiate the random play using using the NDX remote to select the media server on th NDX screen and then scroll to items, and then press play and activate the shuffle. This then plays all items (18000 plus in my case ) in random order.

I have tried to do this via the Naim App but all you get is the same first 500 items in alphabetical order, in my case this never gets past the A’s.

I am interested in upgrading to the NDX2 and I visited my local Naim dealer for a demo last week.

I was impressed by the sound quality but disappointed to find that it appeared that you could not initiate random play in the same way as the NDX.

I was wondering if anyone who had purchased a new streamer recently, ND555 or NDX2 had tried this method, or found a way to play all items in random order.

Can't comment on the new streamers, but there could be some functionality in minimserver.

I use Asset which has a Jukebox Track Selection option - that selects 500 tracks at random from the library - plenty enough for any listening session.

Naimtec, I've moved your thread to the Streaming Audio Room where you'll hopefully have more visibility and input.

Thanks for the suggestion, do you get a different 500 tracks every time you initiate the jukebox  feature?

NAIMTEC - I'm fairly sure this 500 limit has been mentioned before - if true and it's the same 500 random tracks each time the function is clearly not as good as it could be, it would be hard to believe that this was not correctable in software.

I have just tried on the Synology version of Asset and I get 101 random songs each time and they are different tracks.

Yes each time the Jukebox item is browsed into the resulting list is recreated. Asset also allow selection of parameters to base the random on, for example:

Dynamic Browsing >> Genre >> Classical >> [Jukebox track selection]

to play random classical tracks.

That looks great; I didn’t know it existed. Asset is such a good upnp server.

Presumably the Naim streamer imposed 500 track limit still applies?
