Help , US Equipment plugged into UK supply !

Posted by: Terry Smith on 20 September 2018

Hi , I have just moved back to the UK from the US and my system arrived today and I was anxious to reconnect it all . I was feeling very smug that I had it all back together until I plugged it in and realized that it seems the PS for the NAP 300 hasn't been converted to UK power.

Assuming I am correct how serious is the damage that I have caused ?

I anxiously await feedback

Well, I know the feeling Terry, but that's another story.

The damage, if any, will be to the NAP300 Power Supply.  Since that's got to go off to Salisbury to be changed from US to UK power, if you've buggered it up at all they are going to figure this out and fix it for you. Hopefully, the protection circuits will have done their work; if there were no loud bands or smell of burning, you should sleep easy.  Chances are they will have a quiet word with you along the lines of "You haven't by any chance plugged this into a UK socket, have you?"

Whatever the outcome of that conversation, you're going to end up with a UK spec power supply.

If it were me, I'd 'fess up and send along the NAP300 at the same time for a checkup and if anywhere near due-time, a service.   Then I'd know I'm bang up to date (no pun intended) with the best a man can get when it comes to NAP300's.

I'll pray for your NAP300 (and you of course).  It's never worked before with amplifiers, but always worth a try, eh?

DR if you can swing it.

Oh no, that's very bad luck Terry!  I would get on the phone to your Naim dealer here and explain the problem.  The only way to know for sure the extent of any damage is to have both the PSU and power amp inspected by a Naim service tech.  As Skip mentions above, it may make economic sense to have the amp upgraded to DR spec.  In the meantime, check all your other pieces carefully just to be doubly certain they're on the right voltage.

Ok , false alarm . The 300 PS had been upgraded they just hadn't changed the labels on the back. The reason it died was simply a fuse (badly seated powerline I suspect) Dealer kindly got some fuses sent over that arrived today (Sunday) at which point I worked out how to get the fuse holder out to find that Naim kindly put a spare in there - would have been really good to know that Friday afternoon !! Onwards ...

+1.  Glad it worked out ok for you!!

I had a little usb speaker thing with a wall wort power supply that I brought to Greece for family holiday a few summers ago. It wasn't 110/220 compatible. It took me exactly 2 seconds to figure that out; the smell of burning plastic and other materials told me right away!
