Speaker technology has moved on now ,what do people recommend? Or stick? Advice please, thoughts etc

Duncan, if you were to post this in HiFi Corner instead of here on Streaming Audio, you might get more responses.

You don't mention budget, but here's a pair of rather lovely Naim SL2's popped up on the UK version of that well known auction site.

Ovator S400 works for me on a similar set up, if you can find some ..

I use Dynaudio special 40s with a Nova. When auditioning I noticed Dynaudio worked well with Naim. I’d certainly try their Confidence range as recommended above.

I have an HDX with XPS2, 252 + Supercap and used to run a single 250 before going active with NBL's.
The system with a single 250 that you have is capable of producing terrific music!
Although familiar with some Ruark speakers, in particular the Talisman II, I do not know the stand mount model you're using.

I imagine you'd enjoy an uplift with one of Neat's offerings, particularly one with the Isobarik bass arrangement.

I'd suggest you look (& listen) to their stand-mount Neat Momentum SX3i or if you'd like to try floor-standers.
Neat make a smallish floor-stander called the Neat Iota XPlorer which are terrific to my ears (but not everyone's eyes).
A more conventional looking speaker from Neat is the Momentum SX5i

There are loads of speakers out there but, without spending some serious money, you might find you're simply side-stepping for no real gain over what you already have.

With your system, I believe using speakers from 25 years ago may not be delivering the full potential.

My Spendor A5s were my weakest link, so they've gone. I highly recommend PMC twenty5 26s.

PMC for me, work lovely with 250 but you do need to audition as what I like you may well hate. Rich

The Ruark Equinox's are certainly not the weakest link, they were a fantastic speaker in their day. They were however a demanding speaker to drive and would appreciate a bigger power amp, a 300 would certainly push them harder.

However, you might find the new Kudos 505's to be the perfect replacement for them if you are looking to change the speaker, they are less demanding and the Nap 250 will certainly get them dancing.
