What would you want from a speaker upgrade?
Posted by: Popeye on 21 September 2018
Hi guys
Planning a speaker upgrade in due course and thinking about a budget between 5-6k
System is NDX/Supernait2
Currently using Kef R500's and have used kef's for donkies years. Love the kef sound.
Not asking for recommendations as I know it's a personal thing and room dependant but what I want to know is with that budget what specifications would you be working to, to compile a short list.
I.e for 5-6k would you want a 3-way design as apposes to two way and so on.
Thanks again
If you are generally happy then you need to upgrade to ones that fix the short comings with your current models.

Nothing that I want to fix as such, I just want more of everything that they provide so my obvious first choice on my audition list will be the Kef reference 1's .
Likewise my untiqute to NDX/Supernait2 upgrade brought, better everything!
I don’t think I’ve ever looked at speaker specifications. I just look for something that puts me in touch with the music, looks good (to me) and goes near the wall. Your MOT is due on 22 October by the way.

It is indeed, why would you want to check when my MOT is due online? Rather odd...
Bass, bass and more bass but of course the textured and focused variety not the car stereo bloated type. I have tried getting a more focused low end in so many ways most of them wrong and what I've found is the relationship between speaker and room is as important as between amp and speaker.

Popeye, none of this really matters. What really matters is that elastic band by your wheel!!!!!!!!!!
And the 237g of CO2 per km. Think of the saving on petrol that could be diverted into speakers!
Not to upgrade in future!

Unfortunately with the milage we do, it would be a while to make an impact on speakers! ????
Anyway it gets me home quicker to spend more time listening to my system. ????
I just looked it up on the DVLA website, wondering what it was. There is loads of info that I didn’t know was there. Luckily it doesn’t mention the Naim.

What's so odd is I was on the MOT check website about 10 minutes before your post and confused the hell out of me.
It's a Volvo V60 Polestar, only 140 of them in the UK and 1500 worldwide.

Gents this is so far off topic...now...the elastic band!!!!
With your system and your budget - is this going to be a final piece of the jigsaw or do you see yourself changing up ? Both in the speakers much later or your NDX and SN2 to something further ?
If the former rather than the later, then your right having one eye on specifications of a speaker - as you don't want something too esoteric and exotic that requires more. Something that's 90 by 8. Too much deviation from that could need you having to get a bigger amp, not so to make everything louder but more to keep everything in its place.
With that I would be happy to trade ultimate bandwidth to something that still holds the music together and your choice of the Reference 1s is bang on.

My criteria are similar. They have to not look like they come from the set of the Starship Enterprise. They have to do everything that I like about my current speakers, plus more.

Good friends had one of those here. Really nice car. Then they moved to Texas where nobody wants to own a Volvo really (no winter driving, ever).

What about amps ?

That's my favorite episode! "I am endeavoring, ma'am, to construct a mnemonic memory circuit using stone knives and bearskins."
Yes more of everything sums it up, especially articulation and separation of instruments.
Try loads. I would like a nice 3 driver, floor stander for that price.
And what this “more of everything” could be...
- treble like the one AMT Heil tweeters produce. Was a revelation listening to strings on one
- scale and authority when playing orchestral music. A big Wilson would do it
- very fast response: best I have heard was from horn late (but not my cup of tea for other reasons) and metallic constructions like YG
- deep and very punchy bass. Again a big YG would “fit the bill” (figuratively)
- life like mids: many can do that but can they meet the rest of the criteria???
- produce a deep soundstage (for me this is more important than “wide”)
I don’t understand. You like what you have without articulating what you’re looking to improve.
Well perhaps he doesn't know what he's looking for yet because he hasn't had an opportunity to listen to the current variety of speakers. Once he has he will then be in a position to make an informed decision.

Said I want to achieve more of everything, I personally would expect a 5-6k speaker over a 1500 pound speaker to excel at every area (in comparison!)
my question was what specifics would you want at that price point to compile a short list if anything.
Number of drivers in a speaker, like the number of watts from an amp is irrelevant, it's the music that matters. It's almost like saying the more components there are the better it must be. Only your ears can decide, and keep an open mind on driver count. In fact don't mention driver count at a demo no matter how expensive the speakers are. Rich
Better bass, soundstage, cohesiveness, silent background, instrument timbre, more realistic vocals/clarity - same as with most upgrades I suppose.
Additionally a room friendly form factor and aesthetic quality would be nice but ultimately secondary considerations unless SWMBO is an impediment.
