Atom power amp for 2nd room
Posted by: andycr on 21 September 2018
hi all, recently bought an Atom. I’ve been so impressed with it that I want to move it to my main room where I spend most time. The thing is, I always have two sets of speakers in this room as it’s a living room and kitchen and sometimes I have both pairs on. I really like this option at at times. So I was wondering, if I were to buy the Nap 100 and and plug into the pre-out would I notice a delay on the 2nd pair of speakers. I’m presently using an a Arcam a39 which has 2 outputs built in and I can’t hear a delay but just just concerned adding a cable between the two amps might cause a delay. Think this is similar to bi-amping in principal but wondered if anyone is running two sets of speakers off an Atom?
ps I loved the Arcam sound until I bought the naim, now it makes music sound like its slowed down
And
I use a Mu-So in my large open plan loft to fill out the space. The Atom with multi room and the Mu-So (2 units) extend the sound where ever I want.
Thanks for the reply, that would be an option if I hadn’t not that many years ago had speaker wire fitted between rooms when we had an extension done and so feels a waste not to utilise this.
Only catch I can see is that there is no way to turn off the internal amp as there was with the Unitiqute. So it would mean music playing in both rooms if you wanted to listen in the room with the NAP 100
Thanks, yes that could be a problem. I’d have to unplug speaker cables, I guess.
I used to run some small speakers in another room and just connected them to the main amplifier output in parallel with the main speakers and I had a two pole light switch in the speaker cables that disconnected the second room when I wanted.
That worked fine. Mind you this was before I had Naim and my previous power amp was more powerful and less fussy about load than the NAP 250DR I use now.

Until relatively recently I always had secondary speakers spread throughout whatever flat/house I had at the time. I was never happy with the idea of putting the other speakers in parallel with the main ones because you are reducing the impedance seen by the amplifier, more or less halving it. One way I did it was to put the secondary speakers in series with the main ones - which increased the impedance so was safer, but far from ideal. What I actually did mostly was to take the tape out feed and put it through another amplifier. This was, of course, absolutely fine. If I didn't want the main speakers to play then I would simply turn the volume down or mute the output of the pre-amp. This doesn't affect the tape output (line out) of course so the secondary speakers carried on. I would put a pot on the second amp to control the volume of the secondary speakers. Always worked fine.
I think I would just stick a Muso/QB in the kitchen and use multiroom.
Another option is a second hand UC2 with the updated firmware, and run multiroom.
Thanks plenty to think about wnd certainty the Muso/sq sounds the least complex option but one of my usecases is having the TV output going through both speakers at the same time and I guess in this case there will likely be lipsync issues. The wording of my title implies this actually another room but technically it’s one L shaped room. I think im probably going to speak to a local store and loan a nap 100 to see how it works. Having listened again to thr arcam it isn’t as bad as I remembered especially when just on in the background.
I used a UC2 and NAP100 in a luge open plan lounge/dining/kitchen, 100 sq.m, and the sound in the kitchen was great from the lounge. Maybe start with just testing that first?

I'd be surprised if there were lipsync issues unless you have an absolutely huge room. In which case I doubt you could see the lips anyway... Speed of sound is 343 metres per second, so even in a room 15 metres long, you have a delay of about a twentieth of a second. I'm not sure that would be enough to cause a problem. And consider that even in a normal room with TV and speakers near to the TV you are about - what- 10 to 12 feet away from the speakers.

You can use multiroom with the Atom connected to the TV, so you shouldn’t have lip sync issues with another Naim streamer. Assuming, that is, that you have lip sync working properly between your TV and the Atom, which is an issue that sometimes crops up.
Thanks all, really appreciate the info.
I'm pretty sure that connecting a power amp to your Atom as you originally envisaged simply wouldn't work - the power amp section of the Atom would / should be disabled.
I suspect your dealer or Naim Support would be able to confirm the position on this.
I suspect two systems using multi-room would need testing to see if there's some sort of delay. The delay might be introduced by the 'multi-rooming' to ensure they're in sync (rather than the link to the TV).
The delay can't be introduced by the multi-rooming to ensure they are in sync because Naim developers have no knowledge of how far apart the multirooms are or where you as listener are in relation to the products.

Thanks both, I did test last night using the power amp input of an old nad amp and the internal amp remaind powering speakers set A (lounge) whilst the nad powered speakers set B (kitchen extetion) So demonstrates this works in principal. And yes as you say, my original assumption was that a naim wireless multi-room system could add in a delay as I understood some systems delyed the audio so that it could remain in sync between speakers and so i assumed this might be an issue for lip-sync with the video picture but sounds like the naim multi room system doesn’t work this way so one day may investigate further.
I think I’ll pick up a nap 100 and use this to power the main set of speakers A and feed the internal amp (which i assume is marginally lower spec to the nap) to feed the b speakers. As mentioned i dont have the flexibility to flick between and B speskers like i do at present with my arcam but there are workarounds (if not the most elegant) to achice this by unplugging the A speakers from the Atom or disconnecting the phono cable to the Nap.
by the time i have done the above, i may end up appreciating the arcam a little more but we shall see. Thanks everyone for your help on this.
