Time for a Naim Dac backup?

Posted by: nbpf on 23 September 2018

ND555, NDX2, ... rumors of the Naim DAC being discontinued ... the price of new and second hand Naim DACs have dropped over the last few weeks. It is not clear whether Naim will eventually come out with a new DAC 2. Is it time to buy a backup device for my Naim DAC? Or just wait until it dies and then move to another brand?

The new streamers may have led to some extra Naim DACs on the market. I’m thinking of people moving from DAC+555PS to one the new designs.

It would be sad if Naim would end the era of separate DACs, but I wouldn’t buy another one as backup. Mine is a fairly recent one and hopefully good for many years to come. Otherwise there is the great support for legacy devices offered by Naim.

Dac's should have a long life, no heat or moving parts that can die unexpectedly. I am much more worried with the future life for my ns01.

Naim will have to come out with more devices running on the new platform. The question is will it be 272. mark 2,   372, ndac v2, or what I really hope for an integrated dac/preamp that can be used with Core or  any other streaming solution.

I am actually not interested in any streamer or integrated dac/preamp. Thus, for me the relevant question is whether there will be an nDAC 2 or not. In the latter case I will likely stay with the current nDAC for a while and a second hand backup device seems like a good investment at these prices.
