Latency/Sync Issues Audio/Video

Posted by: VJ on 24 September 2018

Hi there,

I've had a muso qb a while now and after much contact with naim, i'm still experiencing severe sync issues when watching TV, You tube on my iPhone 6s, iPad pro etc, i've tried blu tooth and airplay but the qb is unusable. I have a Bang an Olfsen blu too speaker that syncs perfectly, so i'm a little surprised the muso doesn't work perfectly too.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers

And what exactly is the issue?

Could be the way your different devices are connected to your wi-if router.....for example QB on one band, say 2.4MHz and your other devices on 5MHz. If the bands have different loading one may respond faster than the other. Or perhaps you are using wi-fi extenders, all with the same SSID...with some devices connected directly to the router while others connect via an extender to the router.  Or it could be the router itself....some simple (read shyty) ISP routers share bandwidth equally amongst all devices, so some high throughput devices end up waiting to be served. If you have limited bandwidth and several high demand client apps you’ll see problems as you describe. Finally, it could be that your QB is installed somewhere with poor wi-if reception.  Move it close to your router and see if you still have problems

Best way to see what’s going on is to connect to your router and take a look at the different clients and how they’re connected.  Suboptimal wi-if set-up has the capacity to cause your problem in the absence of any other fault, so its the place to look at first,

Hi Blackmorec

thanks for your advice, I have moved it nearer the router before and it was slightly better, if not perfect. I haven’t looked properly at the router and will investigate your suggestions. Don’t use extenders but where it’s located WiFi’s not the best , hence me moving it close to router to test.

I’m a bit perplexed by blu tooth and airplay, I occasionally watch YouTube, iplayer etc and can’t use the naim app for that (well I’m pretty sure I can’t) and this is my main issue, the latency is awful, ive owned at least 3 blu tooth speakers before and never had this issue? Naim blame Apple but I only experience this problem with the naim speaker, not the other brands, very disappointed by this, sounds great but useless for Audio visual at the moment!

Anyhow really appreciate you taking the time to reply mate.

Cheers

I suspect it’s actually something else - latency caused by the buffering of the digitial input signal, re-clocking and then feeding the internal dac.

I once tried recording some tracks, using digital out of my MacBook into an NDS - the latency of the input was so much I was almost a second out vs the rest of the tracks.
