Better  to connect the Core  to the ethernet using a ethernet switch then you can use it at your NAS.

Why it is stopping playing I would suggest you involve your dealer to help and sort.

Question is what was the dealer involvement   ...........   A Core sir,  certainly,  that'll be £1900,  anything else,  something for the weekend maybe.  

Have you tried deep sleep and wake up and a reset of your router? I had trouble seeing the Core on my Mac intially and had to discover it through my network, not sure how you would tackle that on windows, but I would think its a computer or network setting issue, rather than the core per-sue. Once you can see it, you simply drag and drop files into the download directory and they appear through the Naim App.

 A music savvy family member recommended it and acquired it for me.  Which means I didn’t go through a dealer.  I have to take the blame for it’s purchase.  I didn’t have a clue at the time that I’d want to do more.   Now that family member has gone back to school for a Master’s and is crazy busy.   I can’t in good conscience bother him with this.

I don’t  follow your recommendation to use a switch.  Perhaps I have t been clear in my explanation.  Right now this is my situation: 

Bedroom:  Windows 7 Desktop > Router

Living Room:  Ethernet > Naim Uniti Core > Audio Alchemy DDP-1 DAC > Integrated amp

Bedroom at one end of house; living  room is at other end of the house.

I am proposing this:

Bedroom :    Windows 7 Desktop*  > Router > Naim Uniti Core ***                                                *Roon Core

Living Room:  Router > Ethernet >  Audio Alchemy DMP-1 Music Server > Audio Alchemy DMP-1 DAC ** > Integrated amp                                                                                                                       ** Roon ready

***Or I could sell Naim Uniti Core and transfer my WAV files to a Sonic Transporter w/ Roon Core and substitute it for the Naim.  And use dbpoweramp as a ripper.

i do agree it is probably a network problem.  I have considered hiring a computer tech to sort it out for me.

Deep sleep is pushing down the power button for three seconds. Then when you push the power button again, the Core wakes up into active mode. It's effectively the same as a power off/power on and can resolve discovery issues across the network. 

Regarding your setup, the Core can be wired into your network from any location through ethernet. The switch is simply taking one ethernet connection in, and sending it to a number of ethernet outs to multiple devices. You would, for example run a lead from a single ethernet port into the switch and then connect computers, Core, Apple TV's etc from individual leads connected to the ethernet out ports on the switch (the same as splitting electrical outputs on adapter boards).

Surely you already have the Core connected to your router, otherwise it would have no internet connection for metadata lookup, the Naim app wouldn’t see it, and your PC wouldn’t find it either?  It can certainly function as a NAS, or perhaps you mean a UPnP server, as that’s what it is, amongst other things. 

If you run Roon (on your computer, or another device) it can certainly access the music on the Core, although it becomes harder to justify the price as, apart from its ripping function, you could achieve the same thing with a USB drive for £100 or less. 

Personally I would use a sonic transporter as it gives more flexibility than Naims implementstion of upnp and it's self can be used as streamer to a dac, run other music management software and rip your CDs to a format you want rather then the one Naim chooses. It also will output at a higher resolution if using usb and if you want Roon it's a no brainer.

You could sell the Core and buy an Innuos Zen mini, which would give you access to internet radio, Spotify and Qobuz as well as being a cd ripper.

Put DBpoweramp on your computer, and you will not need the Core as a ripper. Another alternative would be an Innuos ripper/server. This also has Roon, Tidal, iRadio etc. so may be a good single box solution. 

Or you could use the Core as a ripper, store and server the way Naim intended, which is connected to your router by ethernet and then use a streamer connected to your amplifier to pull music from the Core by upnp under control of the Naim app.

I am much interested in Roon.  Will the scenario you suggest work with Roon?

That’s really my thinking too. Except the Sonic Transporter can’t rip my CDs.

 

what would I have to do to keep the Naim as a ripper?   If I understand things, and I’m not at all sure I do(!), I’d have to do this:

1)  keep it on the network,

2)  transfer it’s file contents to the Sonic Transporter,

3) rip to its  hard drive, then transfer that file to the SSD inside the Sonic Transporter.  

Would that work?  If so, it sure would be an expensive ripper.

Yes it can if you get the i7 ap version and ask for no storage  as you can then go and fit the SSD from your Naim Core. If you email the creator he will give you a quote for exactly what you want. You can configure them how you need them. With large storage already or without. It's cheaper without and you have your own.

They are not Roon certified and under spec for heavy duty Roon work. Better as an endpoint than a server.

Not if you use it as a Roon server or Roon endpoint which the op wants,  it's all turned off. It's what stopped me from buying it and it's low specced for server to run Room.  If you use it only as upnp then it's fine.

It’s true that Innuos servers are not full fat Roon devices, but given that the OP has, as far as I can tell, a DAC, not a streamer, maybe still worth considering. If you want to use the Roon DSP heavily, this would likely require a separate computer to run the Roon Core, but the Innuos could still have a place in such a setup.

I have already corresponded with Sonic Transporter and (good news!) he will fit my SSD inside the Transporter.  But why would I need the i7 version?

Why not. Future proofs, allows more endpoints, larger library capacity , faster and allows full fat DSP without worrying about the speed of the thing. Also it cd rips so if you sold your core you could possibly but this and have some change (possibly)

I would just put Roon on any spare computer you have, for now, and do the free trial. If you like it, you can decide later on what sort of device you need to run it on. You may never want to use DSP etc.

Not sure if you using Windows or Mac as  core but be aware Windows 10 blocked smb1 in a recent update and you will need to enable it again or the Naim core might not be seen by windows and the Roon Core software. The core I believe uses an older version of smb a number of users have had issues using the Naim core as storage for their Roon systems. YMMV.
