is there life after SL2's..........
Posted by: ameden on 25 September 2018
Its coming up to the 5th anniversary of enjoying the wonderful SL2's
Following a couple of system upgrades I think it could be time to have a look round at/listen to some of the latest speaker offerings out there...and maybe replace the SL2's...
So, plan is to draw up a shortlist to audition of 5-6 speakers/brands...and listen to them in October
Reading through the forum, talking to some dealers, and previous listenings, I currently have the following to consider-
Focal Kanta 2 and/or 3
Kudos Titan 606 and/or 707
B & W 804 and/or 803
Sonus Faber Olympica 2 and/or 3
Would appreciate any comments and focussed input for the shortlist from the Naim folks who have considered/made a similar journey.
Many thanks
(current system in profile)
I’ve never heard Sonus Fabers, but of the others on your list, my vote would definitely go to the Titans. (Either of them, although to my ears, the 808s are in a league of their own if you can afford them!)
Thanks Chris
The guy I bought the SL2's off at the time had replaced them with the previous generation of the Titan 808...sounded very nice..
Although, prob a little too large for my room.
Cheers
Dynaudio confidence.
The chap who owned my SL2s before me moved to Kudos S20s. One option might be to go active with a second 300, though of course that’s four more boxes. There is something just so right about the SL2s. I heard some £28,000 Focals recently and would take my speakers any day of the week. It’s worth remembering that the SL2 would cost about £8,000 if still sold today, and I’m really not convinced that speaker technology has come on that much in ten years despite what manufacturers might say.
Thanks Bob
Dynaudio...very nice speakers...had some stand mounted ones previously
Bass was 'strong'...
speakers live quite close to the wall so may be a little bass overbearing ?
AMEDEN,
interesting that you are considering moving on from the ‘Holy than thou SL2’s....
My philosophy is , ‘each to their own as long as your happy...’ But that said.....
......technology has moved on....their are many many speakers that will sound considerably better...,
Dont be influenced by the anti focal brigade....
Obviously the best thing to do would be audition the choices on your list preferably at home as opposed to the dealer....
my preferred options on your list would be Focal and Titans....
Thanks HH, good comments...food for thought
I did this exercise a couple of years ago and concluded the SL2's were staying (at that time).
However, 'we don't know what we don't know', and things keep changing, so I am back again testing the marketplace.
Have a good evening.
Thanks Wenger
I have an open mind..so very happy to demo some newer speakers, initially at the dealers, then as you say a home demo for any real potential winners..
Have heard the bigger Focals, but not the Kanta's as yet - they look promising...as do the smaller Kudos
I have Focal speakers in the car - so almost there !!
Exciting..
I have never owned SL2s, although I lived for many years with their predecessor, the SBL. I moved onto NBLs which I still use and adore. I do, however, have a very short shortlist of two alternatives which I have heard and might consider, should the NBLs ever need to be replaced. These are the already mentioned Kudos 707 and the PMC Fact 12. Of these, my preferred speaker is probably the latter, although the order might change if I were ever to try them at home. Who knows? But if you are considering a speaker in the price range of the Kudos, then you really ought to have a listen to the Fact 12. It has an incredible ability to present a big, believable soundstage.
Thanks Clive
I listened to the Fact 8 quite recently and that was pretty good...not tried the Fact12..
will see where the nearest dealer is..
Cheers

Yes, they are quite large, too big for my room, but hearing them with NDS/552/300 was an unforgettable experience for me.
You alteady have some great suggestions, personally I would add kef reference and magico to my shortlist for a first store demo. And as a former dynaudio owner, the new confidence speakers when they appears in stores.
I personally wouldn’t have Sonus Faber or Kanta 2 on my list..
I'm sorry I can't offer speaker advice at this level.
I looked at your profile though and wondered if the addition of Fraim glass and balls made a meaningful improvement on your Isoblue, and how? Thanks, and apologies for minor diversion.
Good luck with speaker choice which ever path you decide to take.
Hi. A great speaker is the Ovator S400 a obvious replacement for the SL2 Naim would not have sold them in the were not

I would certainly demo S400’s first before you sell off your legendary SL2 speaker. A rather different speaker than the S400. ????

Have you ever heard the two? If you had you wouldn’t be making that suggestion.
Indeed. The s600's are the true succesors of the sl2's, but I feel there is quite some irony in Stevek's post which would have been noticed by the UK friends if he used the word 'surely'.

The S400 was more of an Allae replacement. The S600 was the SL2 replacement.
Is there life after the SL2s? When it happens for me, I'll tell you all about it.

Oh no, here we go....
yes I must agree with HH on this one. Completely different price range and not a replacement for the SL2 in any way shape or form imo, not sure if S600 would be as well (maybe for some, not me) However our mate Steve in Australia just loves his S400 speakers which is ok with me, one must keep an open mind about theses things. So its a valid suggestion no doubt.
Mr trout, salmon or halibut, please don't decide what I mean yes I have heard SL2 and have owned over the years gales, Sara's,isobariks and Ovators are the best speakers I have heard, the mode radiator, along with a two way speaker, keeping the design as simple as possible is fantastic.
Steve
Told you here we go. ????
now your in for it Steve, forget about the rugby.

You may disagree with me, as I may disagree with you, but that’s no reason for silly names.
Back to the OP. Think we should look at the price range. Which is, I guess around £6500+
The 707 is £13,000. At that sort of price the PMC Fact 12 has to be worth looking at, though may benefit from a 500. I’d also be interested in the ATC SCM 50 active, which would release the 300.
