A Dedicated Mains Upgrade

Posted by: BritishSea on 26 September 2018

I spent about 16 hours running two dedicated lines from my electrical panel to my listening room. This in the context of a USA split 120 volt 50 hz supply.  I have been meaning to do so for about 3 years now and finally got around to it.  It was a royal pain to run the new lines (and I have a few holes in the walls to patch still) but the results are very impressive.  Overall improved background blackness in the system allowing details to emerge which were previously hidden.  It's early days but i am very impressed.

Having said that in the context of a 252/250 system in a prior house I ran a dedicated line and it made less of an impact.  So perhaps there maybe some domestic electrical systems which benefit more from a dedicate mains line, then others?

Well worth doing in my experience, but I guess the quality of your existing wiring (or lack of it) will determine how much if an improvement you hear.

Wish it was worth doing in my house, won't make any difference as the "dirt" is coming from the neighbours

Ive used 15m of BELDEN POWER CABLE 19364 | 83803 COMBINED DESIGN (12mm total diameter) , routed externally all by myself from the braker box to my sound system. Used same type of cable to build my power lines too, using high quality copper plugs.

It worked wonders!

I used 2 runs of  standard 10/2  gauge wire (likely over kill- 12 gauge would have been fine i am guessing) with regular 20 amp duplex receptacles.  I have two of the duplex receptacles wired in series and a third one on its own circuit.    I had no basis for this design other than a few fourm post and some common sense.   I can't advocate this design over others, having no reference to compare.

I currently have the amp on its own circuit and the rest on the other.

In addition to the increased blackness of the back ground the system now also images better.  I was not expecting this.

Naim’s recommendation for UK mains is to use 10 square mm cable, which is a bit bigger than 10 gauge, so maybe overkill is good!

This is something - I need to do - perhaps next year...

You should. At your level of equipment it would make a lot of sense.

I have recently moved, but in my previous house I had a dedicated supply back to the meter cupboard. Unfortunately, I could not hear any difference whatsoever.

Yes, It must be good to have one's hi fi system on an independent supply, away from dish washers, fridges etc...But, If one has dirty mains coming in from the Street, splitting it two ways won't clean it up.

In theory, the best way would be to clean it, but as we all know, Naim does not recommend this, and some people have said that it degrades the SQ.

Yes – it’s a bit of a leap of faith as it’s not one you can really try first. For the price of little more than a Powerline you can ensure you’re making the most of the rest of the equipment, something I was always curious about before I put in the dedicated supply. Whilst you can’t control the quality of the incoming mains feed from the street, you can at least remove the influence of multiple connections (particularly in the earth connection back to the incoming supply) between hi-fi and CU you get when connecting to a typical house ring. Apart from the general uplift in SQ, the previous degradation in SQ when my plasma TV was on disappeared which was a nice bonus.

Yep. My little Nait 1 rather likes the dedicated feed.
