Asset is adding a loud click at the end of each track

Posted by: Guinnless on 29 September 2018

I've bought a DSD64 album from HDTracks and the track plays perfectly on my PC using Tascam Hi-RES Editor.
Also plays fine via USB on my ND5XS.
It streams nicely from QNAP/Asset until the last second and I get a loud crack; it them moves onto the next track, clicks at the end and so on.  Asset is configured to play DSF files "as is".

Any ideas?

You might be unlucky ... merging DSD files without clicks is very difficult, Naim experimented in recent firmware to minimise any click... but it’s not infallible. So one player might have no clicks with some files, but clicks with others.

As Simon says,  Naim tried very hard to eliminate this problem when they first intro'd DSD as a beta.  Using Synology's own UPnP media server into my NDX at that time it was improved significantly to a level that I now have to listen very hard to detect it & with some albums its not there at all.       I'm now using Asset UPnP beta for Synology & the click is unchanged from the Synology UPnP & just the same soft 'tick'.   I have not changed the Asset configuration & DSF is set to play 'as is'

You might get some advice if you drop Illustrate (the AssetUPnP) owner forum a line.

Thanks for the replies gents.   My ND5 is a 2011 model with the latest firmware.  I'll register with Illustrate and see if they can help.

It's only one album; I wish I'd ordered it as DSD128 now Why don't HDTracks allow you to download in a different format without paying again?

Your ND5 will not play DSD128 - All the 'legacy' streamers,  ND series & integrated, are DSD64 only.   I would not be too concerned as the diff between 64 & 128 not that significant,,  similar to the kind of differences you get with 96kHz vs 192kHz 24-bit PCM

Hi again Guinnless,  I should have asked in my other post what firmware are you on ??? I can't remember what rev DSD was embodied without going back on notes & what public rev firmware the click was fixed,  but I assumed you are on the latest which is 4.6.

Hi Mike-B:  I know the ND5 won't play DSD128 but my nDAC will.  Track 1 doesn't click so my previous statement about the ND5 playing UBS fine is incorrect.

No click playing through my nDAC though. So it's either play on the DAC or press mute between tracks just like with the adverts on the TV

Firmware is 4.6.

Product: ND5XS
IP Address: 192.168.1.75
App: 2.8.0
App Build: 4653
ARM APP: 4.6.00
ARM BSL: 1.2.22 3D
APP: 14171
3D BSL: 1874
3D CNE: 13731

Thanks again. And for the reassurance that I'm not missing out too badly on the DSD128

Have over 700 DSD based Albums, playback is through NDS with latest firmware, with Asset R6.1 on a RaspberryPi2.

dsf files are played 'as is' for native processing on the NDS

No clicks, pops or noise between tracks.

Also able to play DSD from Roon, through the Sonore UPnP Bridge, using DoP directly into the UPnP input, where dsf files are played as DSD64, and again without clicks, pops or noise between tracks.

What's also nice here, is any DSD128 or DSD256 (I have 2 or two) are transcoded in the Roon Core, and presented as DSD64, so you can play anything. Same with DXD and the 1 or 2 24 bit/352,8 kHz albums I have - seamless playback.
Plus MQA playback, with 1st unfold processed in the Roon Core, and presented as PCM FLAC up to 24/96

Hmm the plot thickens

I've discounted any streaming as it clicks running off the USB stick on the ND5 but no clicks playing on the nDAC.

The DSD playback firmware is different between the streamers and the Naim DAC. I use a NDX feeding Hugo via DoP and I get only a faint tick sometimes between some tracks.

Umm, I also upgraded from a ND5XS which played DSD64 without issue, with Asset running on the RPi2. This was with the Beta firmware at the time, before it was released & Asset R5, which was the first version to support dsf/dff serving.

Could you create another Asset instance, say on a PC, and try serving the dsf files from there.

Also do you have another DSD based album to try?

Also how are you feeding the nDAC, from the digital output of the ND5XS or another source and what input?

I've eliminated any streaming issue by using a USB stick on both ND5 and nDAC.  The ND5 clicks and the nDAC doesn't; as SiS mentions the playback firmware is different on the nDAC.  I don't have another album to try and I'm reluctant to buy another one if I can't have the convenience of streaming from Asset.

I may drop Naim Customer Service an email with all the version details and see if they are all up to date.

That is a good idea. Please do share what they advise  you.

Have you tried a Sampler - downloaded for Free or reduced cost e.g. https://bluecoastmusic.com/fre...wnloads#.W7C4eHtKhdg and https://www.nativedsd.com/homepage/samplers or https://www.computeraudiophile...es-free-dsd-sampler/

No reply as yet from Naim - except the automated response.  I've not bought anyting else as yet as I've already bought my this album twice from HDTracks (one 24 bit PCM and the other DSD).  I've got my eye on another DSD album also available in 24bit and DSD but I'm reluctant to shell out another 15 quid just to see if it clicks; and if it does I've then got to buy the PCM version.

Would a PCM converted to DSD be a representative test ?

I've still had no response so I've chased it up with Naim.
