run-in / warm up for non NAP units

Posted by: gramophone on 29 September 2018

Ive got a Star with a 250. Ive been using them for a good while.

Im getting a NDX 2 in a few weeks (ready for me at dealers but I'm gonna be away so no immediate install). The NDX 2 will replace the star.

Ive got ex demo units stacked in boxes that will come into play once I get the new streamer: preamp + PS and a PS for the NDX 2. So I'm presuming these are run-in cos they're all at least a 2 years old. But they're not presently getting any current through them.

My question is should I plug them in, in readiness for the arrival of the new NDX 2 with which they will comprise my new system? Get them warmed up so to speak.

I’m sure your energy supplier will thank you............

Let's assume I'm gonna "offset" the extra power consumption. The excitement of the anticipation has made me forget about washing my clothes and showering.

Assuming that the 2yo ex-demo units have been in steady use, they should already be run in. So in my experience, it should take no more than 24 hours for run in units to come up to temperature and thermally stabilize once powered on.

With a unit that's already run in then it takes anywhere from an hour to 3 days to reach a performance peak.  In my experience, power amps are often (but not always - NAP300) quickest, which is why I sometimes switch them off if I know I won't be listening to music on them within the next 24 hours. However, if they have been unpowered for quite a while then it could take longer - at least 3 days.

In your case, I think that getting everything set up and powered up a few days before the NDX2 arrives is a very good idea.  It will also give you an idea of the performance and let you know of any possible issues with the s/h kit before the streamer arrives.

I defer to Richard. I live in sunny California where perhaps it takes less time to come up to temperature and stabilize ;-P
