CD5x Service Options
Posted by: Audiohoon on 01 October 2018
hi all,
Is there such thing as a CD5x recap service available?
I imagine there is. Why not email Naim?
Already did. Thing is I sent an email a couple of weeks ago to AudioPlus and someone replied that there is no re-cap service for CD players. Yet I’ve seen units (same as mine) being sold with a recap service proof done in Sussex by Naim.
There seems to be a lot of different information out there, but I’d like to confirm if in the US this is an option to recap offered.
I would ask the question again, but differently. For CD players servicing is is quite different than recapping.
If your CD player works ok, leave it alone. If and when the transport/laser mechanism fails, Naim will be able to replace it. At the same time they may replace a couple of small caps/resistors, but not in the way a power amp requres new caps which are far bigger and put under a lot more stress.. Shipping a perfectly good CD player around, has the potential to upset a good working transport. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, applies to CD players.
The CD5X has an internal supply so yours might benefit if it's getting on a bit, but I reckon Gary's answer is on the ball.
Yes, it’s best to leave Naim CD players, and tuners for that matter, well alone unless something goes wrong.

Thanks Gary,
I’ve been experiencing an error message when I first load cd’s. I can get it to play after I press stop and then play again.
This is on top of a slight popping noise I sometimes hear that is cyclical. I’m assuming is a lazy or tired pick up.
I do however want to make sure that if I am sending it in, I can take care of that, any electrical components (caps etc...), and also a display that has developed bubbles along side a highly bleeded Naim logo.
Ok, then Naim, or an authorised Naim repair centre can do the necessary. Sounds like your laser mech is on its way out, but obviously needs to be diagnosed. Any other work required, such as replacing a few components and parts, and maybe a software update, can all be done at the same time. Sounds like a good time to get it all done, the CD5X is a fine player, in fact was my introduction to the the CD format after years of vinyl with my Naim amps.

Thanks Gary.
Do we know if Naim still have the original pickup for replacement? I think the CD5x came with a VAM1202. Just want to know if it’s still possible to replace like for like.
thanks all!
Pretty sure they do as i think it's what went in the CD5XS and last version CDX2.2.
Gary,
Thank you you for your responses. Let’s see how she comes back.

In the US >>> http://www.avoptions.com/service ---- AVOptions: The only 3rd Party authorized Naim Audio Service & Restoration Center in the USA.
Why not contact them if you are looking for work in the USA, I'm sure they will be able to answer your question.

I did. They told me they would send the unit to audio plus.
Hey guys! My unit is currently at audio plus, and they have quoted me to replace the pick up. However, I went ahead and asked them to quote me for a recap. This is somewhere around $300 to do, but the technician has questioned why I’d like to do this.
I have only asked about the recap because ive seen other people get their CD players sent out for service and some have re-capped, however, is this something that really has to be done?
The technician at audio plus said he sees this as normal on amplifiers, but not on a CD player.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!
I would trust Chris West at AV Options on any matter along these lines. Down-selling in this case is a good sign.
Nick
Chris west wasn’t able to do work on mine since he’s flogged with work so he recommended to audio plus.
This is audio plus not audio video.
CD players don’t need recapping. I’d just get the fault fixed and leave it at that.
Sounds good. I’ll just leave caps as is.
thanks all!
