Long listening sessions
Posted by: mpw on 05 October 2018
Hi
I normally listen to music about 3 to 5 hours at a stretch
The ambient temperature will be about 33 to 37 Deg Celsius and I normally do not use an air con or a fan as I like no ambient noise.
Tropical climate with humidity
My SN2 does get warm to touch ( all around) after about 3 hours.
My rack has 6 inches space above the SN2 and sides are open.
Should I be worried ?
What are your observations?
Regards

Wow! That's very warm. Just put the air-con on, mine has a "quiet" setting. It's not silent but quiet for a 5kw Daikin.
any members from warmer climes / asia may chip in with their observations..
i am assuming ambient temp in Europe ( incl UK   and America wont be so high as in tropical asia..
regards
I'm in the UK so my Daikin tends to get more use in heat mode rather than cool. De-humidify can sometimes be used as a very quiet cool mode if your unit supports it.
for me anything over 24C is too warm. LOL ????
I am not familiar with the SN2, but in general warm to the touch, as opposed to too hot to keep your finger on, doesn’t sound in the slightest anything to worry about. I Understand that that many (maybe all?) Naim amps have thermal overload protection - if the SN2 does, then a) your music will be interrupted if it does get too hot, but the amp will survive, and b) the fact that it is not tripping out tells you it is comfortable with the temperature. So if you are concerned, check to see if it is fitted with protection.
FWIW, my old MF power amps’ heatsinks readily got too hot to more than touch and instantly remove finger, and the rest of the casing very warm, in an ambient temp of very low 20s, and have played happily for hours on end over many years without issue - but that of course is a different design.
Naim separate power amps have an automatic shutdown set at 70 degrees C internal temperature, as do some of the Unitis, so I suspect the integrated amps probably have this feature too. If so, it will let you know if it can’t handle the heat by switching itself off.
Hi
i own a SN2 and I'm lucky to manage a couple of 5 hours sessions each week and the amp can get warm to touch on many occasions.I'm in the Uk, but I am sure the heat you experience does not add to this issue and this is nothing to worry about and as other members have said the amp shuts down to protect itself if it gets too hot.
let me ask naim support specific to the Naim SN2
I live in the same conditions, I cool the room first, then turnoff ac, then have break to cool down again
Thank you
I did not think of that
