Naim DAC V1 - no sound after 30 sec of playing

Posted by: Ivo B on 06 October 2018

Hello,

I'm experiencing the following problem with DAC V1 playback - after launching an album/song the sound disappears after 30 seconds more or less. After that I can't launch another song. When I switch the V1 off and on I can play for another 30 something seconds and than again the sound disappears. If I didn't switch off I can't start another playback.

The configuration is Mac Mini (Audirvana+ 3.2.11 latest) / DAC V1 / Nac 112x / Nap 150x / FlatCap2. The USB cable is Audioquest Carbon. I will appreciate any advice helping to solve this issue.

BR,

Ivo

HI ivo,

I don't have a DAC V1 so can't help, but I notice you have had no response to your plight for over two hours.

If you bought your DAC V1from a dealer I would call the dealer and ask for his advice.

If you bought your kit privately (second hand) I would copy your above post by e-mail to Naim and seek their advice. Don't expect a technical response unti Monday at the earliest.

Naim don't monitor the Forum for fault reports, although Richard does sometimes notice things and will help when he can.

Hope you get it sorted soon, either by help from the Forum or as outlined above.

Cheers, Don

Just a couple of things to try in the mean time...

Does this still happen when using headphones (if not then the fault is probably downstream in the amp).

Do you have another DAC and USB cable you can try to see if it's the interface from the MAC that's causing the trouble?

Thank you Don!

I have bought the V1 from a dealer, brand new. I spoke with him over the phone - he didn’t have an info regarding similar failure but offer to bring him the DAC. From Naim support referred me to the dealer. I brought the Mini and the V1 to a speacialist to be checked and repaired hopefully.

Let’s hope the specialist can sort it out. Or that help arrives from the Forum, eg The post by Huge. Mind you, i’m Surprised your dealer wasn’t more helpful, unless he has put you in touch with the specialist.

good luck

No, I don’t have a headphones. This failure appeared recently but is a constant one. Each and every time I try some music. And no, I have only this one. But when the problem started the cable was not touched/moved.

Anyway, if the repair is a siccessfull I will share info for the failure’s reason and respective cure.

No, my dealer offered me his support. It was decision of mine to go to this particular specialist.   I know him and I trust him.

I cant think of why it would start then stop, can you hook the dac to something else, I would suspect the mac initially.

As promised here is the feedback. The DAC V1 went to a specialist together with the MacMini and USB cable. It was tested and no problem was detected. The Mini was tested too - it's OK. Neither the DAC nor the Mini were opened. They simply worked. So I received them back and connected to the rest of the system. Exactly the same way as before the fault. Everything works OK. Right now I'm listening to some nice music. I didn't make any changes or updates to Audirvana +. Have no explanation about the cause of this temporary problem but I'm happy that the DAC, the MacMini and the USB cable are OK and in operative mode.

Thank you for all the suggestions aiming to help me resolve this issue.

Wish you a nice week ahead!
