Modern music - CD/streaming vs vinyl

Posted by: Alley Cat on 10 October 2018

A guilty pleasure perhaps but apart form one or two tracks I thoroughly enjoy ABC's Lexicon of Love II

Originally found it on Qobuz and played via Chromecast to Nova.

Later I bought it on vinyl, sadly a few scratches on receipt, but the LP12 playback stunned me with the extra detail, musicality and enjoyment, and as this was via the Nova's digitised analogue in even more surprising.

I wanted to test this on an NDX 2 so ordered the CD from Amazon and ripped it.

Playing the ripped CD from the NAS is ok, but frankly underwhelming.

So is this a sign that the mastering for the CD and vinyl of a contemporary release can differ significantly, or is my LP12 simply that much better?

Had there been a hi-res download available I'd have got that, but in all honesty I find many CD rips sound excellent on modern streamers, so not sure why this title sounds a bit 'flat' when streamed.

Any similar experiences?

Try it on a USB stick direct onto the Nova. It is being streamed as 16/44 ?  Otherwise you may have two different masters.

There was a Deluxe version of this Album, issued 2004 on CD & a digitally remastered version in 1996 against the original released 1982.

Tidal has both the standard and Deluxe - so you could try these and see if any different.

I too have a Vinyl pressing, as well as a ripped version in the Music Library, which has all the Deluxe Edition tracks as well, but I have just added those on the additional disk to an earlier rip. But no HiRes release, I am aware of.

Will give them a listen in the next couple of days, as a great Album.

Have you seen them live recently?

I have it on 24/192 for me it's one the the finest records I have and I use it at demo's - I too own LP12 but don't have this on Vinyl with the quality of this recording I don't see the need

but on my LP12 Daft Punk even in Hi Res is surpased on Vinyl  Lp12 vs NDX

Where was the 24/192 from, as I can't seem to find it.

Thanks, Simon.

In my experience records released before digital recording and mastering came in sound better in an Analogue format of course this is a general rule and not 100% true.

Unless stipulated modern vinyl releases are usually cut from a digital master but that’s not to say they won’t sound better. The last new release I bought Paul Welles’s True meanings sounds a lot better on vinyl.

If you are into music from the 50’s,60’s,70’s & 80’s you really do owe it to yourself to hear it as it was intended to be heard via an Analogue replay system other wise your just missing out.

I think Bob The Builder has hit the nail on the head with his observations. I entirely agree with him. If an LP is cut from a digital master .... !? Rich

I found it something of a grower, having initially though it was 'so so' many of the tracks became ones that stuck in the head - what really did it for me was listening to the LP as it just made everything more enjoyable, so much so I'm intrigues by the though of upgrading the LP12.

I suspect that's the original album as I would have got a hi-res download of the newer album had I been able to find it. Not on Qobuz or a few other sites.  Not sure about Tidal though.

CD just over a fiver on amazon made sense compared to CD quality download for almost £14!

This really is what I find interesting - this is a 2016 release, almost certainly digitally mastered, but I guess the derivative master for CD could be quite different to that used for the vinyl release.

It would be interesting to hear of other recent albums where we vinyl lovers feel the vinyl surpasses the CD or hi-res download/stream.

Interesting, so much better sounding with a loaned NAC 282 to my olive NAP 250.  Interesting pre/power combination - very warm and detailed.  I think the NAC 72 must be in need of servicing or is simply not up to the job here.  Need to try the vinyl again.

I tried for years to enjoy the CD of Toni Childs House of Hope on the lounge system. Finally stumbled on the vinyl. Way better mastered. Way better as a result. If only they would have another go at remastering the CD ... I have had other examples come to mind as I type. Then I know of other examples where the vinyl release is a poor copy of the CD. If only care could be taken for all formats.
