Synology reset... ...again!
Posted by: Torry on 10 October 2018
Hi everyone, long time reader of the forum here.
I have a Synology DS214play NAS feeding into a Unitiserve. The setup has provided hazzle-free playback for some years now, until yesterday when I decided I had to have a look at the folders on my NAS... I could not remember my admin password and decided to press the NAS reset button to reset the password.
I can log onto my NAS just fine, and the files and folders are all there. However, in the web interface for the Unitiserve the Musisc store I rip to have a red flag and has status 'error'. Also any network share I enable will have a red flag and be offline.
Can anyone please advice how to solve this puzzle?
Regards,
Torry
Maybe the IP address has been updated by resetting and therefore the Unitiserve can't "see" it? Just a thought..

This is my guess as well.

Thank you for your reply, do you know how I can check if this is the case?
Some settings that may be relevant: Unitiserve system status: 'Adress mode: DHCP'. NAS Control panel, LAN, Use DHCP: 'Yes'
I have reset the Unitiserve and NAS a couple of times, but reading your reply I realise I have not reset the router yet (US and NAS are wired here). Is this something to try?

Yes, try a router restart - it may just sort things out if it's an IP address issue.
If you load an app called Fing into your iPad or phone, it will scan your network and tell you the IP address of everything connected.
It's the Unitiserve that needs to know the NAS IP address, not you! So look at your router settings, Fing, Net Analyzer, or whatever you use, and then look in the US settings and check that it has the correct IP address for the NAS. Hopefully, a router restart will sort things out and this won't be necessary, but if not, that would be my next step.

I shut the whole system down: routers, NAS and US. Booted everything, but too no avail.
Some IP address information: NAS IP address: 192.168.10.153; default gateway: 192.168.10.1; IPv6 default gateway: unchecked ( but has Preferred DNS server: 109.247.114.4). Unitiserve: IP address: 192.168.10.150; Gateway: 192.168.10.1; DNS-1: 109.247.114.4.

I checked fing and it replicated the IP-addresses for US and NAS as described above (It gives a different name for the US though, it used to be NSSRV [last four MAC characters], now it is NSSRV [something else, does this matter].
In US, I can not see that the IP address for the NAS is referred to anywhere, where do I find this?

On a Mac, use N-Serve and go to Maintenance > Network Stores, and you should see the NAS and its IP address listed. If you use Windows, I assume the Desktop Client can give you this info, but I don't use it myself.

Thanks,
I have downloaded the desktop client (getting a version warning on the way), under Maintenance I don't have a 'Network Stores' option, but under 'Status & Messages' -> 'System Status' it says 'DISKSTATION\Naim [Offline]'.
So it looks like the US can't find the NAS, and the IP address issue may well be the cause of that.
Have you tried the Refresh All Shares button? If not, go to the web browser interface by typing the US IP address into a browser. Then go to System > Network Shares > Refresh All Shares. This might at least get your shares up and running - not sure if it will also fix the music store, but there's no harm in trying.
Problem solved!
Thanks to excellent advice, I downloaded the desktop client where I was able to give US the new password for the music store on the NAS. It didn’t cross my mind that I had to do this after having changed the NAS password, bummer!
Thank you everyone for giving advice!
