Shelving Unit

Posted by: lambretta on 12 October 2018

Thought I'd put my picture up here for comments - the chap who serviced my LP12 was pretty horrified to be honest, but then he was trying to sell me a Fraim...

Anyway, some context, we moved into the new house 3 years ago and I had managed to put enough money to one side to buy my ideal setup: LP12, CDX2, Nap 250, Nac 282, Superline phono stage, there's a supercap in there, a hicap (which I think powers the superline, I can't quite remember) and the Lingo for the LP12.  The speakers (Focal 1028be) sit either side the bifold doors into the garden and required £600 worth of AC5 cable to be buried under the floor to reach them!

I then designed the unit to house everything, based pretty much on what I had bought (actually there have been some small changes since I first bought everything, the superline is new and that space used to have a Pioneer streaming thing which I ditched for a (hidden) Sonos with the Hugo/ W4S combo you can just make out behind the CD's on the left).

As you will (hopefully) notice, the unit was designed to be aesthetically pleasing, the Veebee painting on glass above the TT is a favourite of my wifes (so gets her buy in), the lego built by my 11 year old etc etc. What I didn't do was any research into how this would sound - I also didn't know anything about needing seperate spurs or suchlike, which is frustrating as the house was ripped to pieces so would've been very easy to do.

So my question is, do I really need to consider a change to the layout? Can I get the best sound out of this setup? I was toying with trying to remove the superline and use a smaller phono stage so I could then fit a second supercap for a Nap300. If I did that, I could at least site both supercaps on the shelf either side of the TT, which would move them away from the amps.

There's lots I would do if I was designing it again, not least make the thing moveable as getting all of the wires sited properly was a nightmare, and I can never remember how everything is connected! But it cost a pretty sum and we do like the way it looks, so I'd be loathed to change it unless it really was a no brainer. It's probably also worth noting it's a big room with an odd shape, so again not an ideal listening space anyway.

I think it sounds great, but I have very little to compare it to in terms of experience.

Grammar police in action again HH? Check your own posts, most of us can’t be arsed with such cheap point scoring.

I don’t bother commenting most of the time, but it is quite jarring to read posts with bad grammar so I empathise when others do raise it.  The apostrophe is a particular example - surprisingly in most cases as the rules are actually very simple - but I won’t continue as that is not the subject of this thread.

Funny how we all interpret those little effections around the written word differently. Grammar is meant to be a universal discipline, although we can all have our own interpretations. My full stop is a shy half spot with emotional issues .

That said, I am leaning towards the Vulcan, I think it will look better than having the TT raised up on feet anyway, and they've agreed to do me one powder coated in white...

???? Lambretta,....The Vulcan wall-shelf is great,but there are two top-boards.
A thicker and a thinner.....

◾The thinner sounds better musically,..Select it.!

But if you find a Mana wall-shelf,so it is even better..But hard to find because it stopped being manufactured.
Therefore, the used market is what you have to look for.

I don't see in the picture if you have Trampolin,..but usually on a Vulcan wall-shelf so  sounds a LP12 better without Trampolin.
In other words, use the four original rubber feet in the corners,..Together with an Alu-baseboard.

Keep in mind that a Trampolin is a compromise, for a LP12 to work "Good Enough" on as many dossiers as possible.

Good luck….

B) 3 little boys under 11 .
Two very good reasons why a Rack of any kind is perhaps not needed/recommended in your situation Lambretta.
Especially since there’s an expensive turntable involved.
I’d say stick with what you have. To my eyes it looks great and is a very neat and practical solution.

Agreed. It does look like you have spent a lot of time and effort over this. Over on other threads most of the time the subject of hiding a rack is very widespread.   Good Job.

Although you might want to reconsider in a good few years when more time is available to spend that more time with a critical ear enjoying your music collection.

???? Lambretta,.....One more thing,..if you are looking for the best music-quality from your LP12....

Never place your LP12 at the top of a rack,.. whether it's a Naim Fraim, Mana, Quadraspire or any other rack.

When you place black boxes on the shelves during your LP12,..so it will be inferior music-quality from your LP12.
The more devices that weigh down your rack,..the poorer music-quality from your LP12.

The same goes for the height, higher racks..gives poorer music-quality from your LP12.

◾ Wall shelf,..or a single, low floor standing rack for your LP12 is the best..where you have only placed your LP12.
This,..if you want to get the best music-quality out of your LP12.

◾ Your riaa you place on a individual shelf,..not under or next to your LP12.

We stay there,..whitout knowing exactly, but as you describe your family situation with less children....
Well then,a wall shelf seems to be the best.
The other you can take when the kids become bigger.

But at the same time,..have you got a thought ahead about improvement,..so maybe it's hard to stop..????????.

I have to add my personal recommendation to this sound advice (pardon the pun), having recently bought an LP12 and plopped it on top of my Quadrapsire rack. I thought it sounded great but as it would skip if I walked too near it I decided to invest in a wall-mounter and it made a positive difference.

I couldn't really afford the Vulkan though I understand it was designed with the LP12 in mind. I went for a Project shelf which looked very similar to the (discontinued), ones Target used to do.

If you do go ahead, also think about installation. I don't know what sort of wall you have but it's got to support 20kg+ for the LP12. I had my shelf installed by the people I bought my TV from who came and wall-mounted it for me. They used the biggest, baddest bolts I've ever seen and I rest easy knowing it the shelf would survive a direct kicking from Conor McGregor, even if the LP12 doesn't!

The Project rack would actually fit better in my case, as it is supported from above as well as below so I could get it closer to the current shelf. I'm a little worried that the vulkan will end up pushing the TT too high up to be able to open the lid properly, and ruin the aesthetics!

Entirely your perogative of course Lambretta. Project make 5 shelves, each for different types of walls. Only one of them is suitable if you have a stud wall - the "5", that's the one I've got and I'm very pleased with it.
