Using MoodeAudio player on a Raspberry Pi Qobuz streaming can be controlled with the Naim app

Posted by: HedgeBre on 12 October 2018

After following the excellent recent thread about the use of BubbleUPnP to play Qobuz to Naim streamers I thought I would buy a raspberry PI to move BubbleUPnP from my IMAC to the Pi following Simon in Suffolk's advice on his setup.

In the same thread, member (KRM) mentioned Moode. I looked this up and got to MoodeAudio.org and was intrigued as KRM had said his brother used it to play Qobuz.

Anyway, after following some pretty easy instructions on setting up a Pi for Moode, I had the Moode player up and running. I set up the UPNP settings for both Tidal and Qobuz. Here is the reason I am posting about this.

Once setup, the Naim app sees the MoodeAudio UPNP player (like any other UPNP player) and you are able to use it to control the Tidal and Qobuz streaming natively in the Naim app. No need for Lumin or Kazoo etc. Install wasn't too difficult if you have any experience with Pi.

As many here like to keep things as native as possible I thought this was a neat solution getting Qobuz streaming (currently listening to Kurt Vile in 24 bit stream and it sounds excellent) all controlled from the Naim app.

I never got on with Lumin etc so am happy that the control is vis Naims UPnP menu option.

Very interesting. I'm doing some testing with Bubble as a proxy so please do tell us more.

I guess not that much more to tell, MoodeAudio player I guess is acting as the proxy, like BubbleUPnP does.  It is installed onto the lighter weight stretchlite OS, I like that as it is more minimal than the standard install that has browser, desktop, office apps etc. I like the idea it is lightweight and more single purpose, less additional processes running etc, exactly the reason I was moving away from IMAC.

The benefit I feel is not using Lumin etc as the control point. I am also really enjoying sound quality it is putting out. I am not a huge huge fan of the Naim app and also use Roon but I find the Naim app easier to use than Lumin for when I want to use Qobuz.

Ultimately I am hoping the sonic benefits I hear from Qobuz streaming are evident when the rumored Roon integration with Qobuz is made available.

Roon already is actting as  proxy server for Tidal and internet radio so it should be no diiferent.

Which streamer?

Does gapless playback work?

Interesting thread... but curious about your comment on SQ.. the control point (LUMIN, Naim App, Kazoo etc) has absolutely nothing to do with SQ or even the process of rendering the audio.     Kind of like saying the SQ of your CD player varies on which IR remote control you use.

Simon, I reread my post and see where it may seem I am saying the SQ is benefitted from a change in control app. I didn’t mean that, I meant the benefit to using Moode is the control point is the Naim app, which I thought many would prefer, for some reason I was always adding things to playlists incorrectly in LUMIN.

The SQ from Moode is very very good so far, to my ears, like I said I like it’s on the stretch lite OS, it runs headless etc. I may setup another Pi for bubbleupnp to try head to head for SQ comparison.

I am running this into an NDX

I installed the moode in my Allo Digione player. My Digione is connected by ethernet. My Qobuz account is settled, my Naim Uniti Nova sees the Moode player upnp. I choose an album with the naim app but...no sound. Can someone help me to settle correctly the moode? By the way, thank you so much Hedgebre for the info!

Beajuju - Did you enable dlna as well as upnp ? You need to do that.

I did it. I can browse, I can see and select my favorites, but unfortunately it doesn’t play. Why? Thank you once again Hedgebre!

HedgeBre,

As an existing BubbleUPnP, I was intrigued by your post.

Like yourself, my plan was to setup a second Pi running Moode prior to conducting a side-by-side comparison, against BubbleUPnP, of usability and sound. Having successfully compiled and configured Moode (for integration with Qobuz), initial tests seem promising. However, one key feature I’m missing is the ability to search Qobuz. This would be a major omission for me and so I'm curious as to whether you have this working in your environment or not?

If so, I would be keen to understand how the search feature is enabled. The control point is also the Naim app in this example.

I have just looked again and you are correct, there doesn’t seem to be a way to search Qobuz using the Naim app. I’ll have a look around and post if I find anything.

I'm using Bubble on my mac to stream Tidal to to my Raspberry how do I download Bubble directly on to the Raspberry? And could you post instructions on how to download MoodeAudio player to the Pi as I woul like to try it. I know you are controlling it via Naim app but how would you control it without Naim app?

Hi Bob,

You don't say what stage you are at with the Raspberry Pi build, so I am going to make the assumption that you have Raspbian, or similar, already installed. With that in mind, simply SSH into the Pi and issue the following commands -

$wget https://launchpad.net/~bubbleguuum/+archive/bubbleupnpserver/+files/bubbleupnpserver_0.9-5_all.deb
$sudo dpkg -i bubbleupnpserver_0.9-5_all.deb

The service should be running following successful install. Connect to it via a browser -

http://address:58050   [replacing 'address' with the relevent IP of your Raspberry Pi]

Additional information can be found here (including configuration guidelines) -

https://bubblesoftapps.com/bub...rver/#ubuntu_install

Again, I can't provide guidance on the control point, as you don't indicate what device is being used.
