all olive- stay pat or upgrade
Posted by: davidf on 15 October 2018
I have all olive: CDS2/XPS/01tuner/ 52/supercap/135s into Focal 1038be`s
on full fraim, all serviced in past 5 yrs, powerlines all around (except for 01)
very large room- 30ft x 20 ft with cathedral ceilings peaked at 16 ft- also opens up into other rooms
overall my system sounds great. On hardwood floor (over cement) with large rugs, plenty of furnishings.
Have not made any major hifi purchases for long time. I can live with my current system and probably will, however
what would be biggest upgrade- 500 instead of 135s vs 552 instead of 52. Note:no plans to enter streaming world until my CDS2 breaks.
Thanks, david
Newer Naim has a somewhat different sound, or presentation.
Many folk prefer the older Naim sound.
Listen carefully and trust your own ears.
Why not build a second system in the same room? Its large enough.
I'm during daytime listening to digital black stuff, and in the evenings to olive stuff and LP's. Its different, but both enjoyable in its own way.

2 systems 1 room?? I don`t think so.
cannot think of any reason to consider this.... with all due respect

But... to the naysayers I say, don't fear the mix.
I have chrome, olive and black and DR.
Sounds fab.
'nuff said.
Go on a plush holiday or buy a Jaguar iPace with the saved cash.
wise words
I like Suzy Wong’s suggestion of going active with SL2s. A four pack of 135s and the active crossover would cost a lot less than a 500 series box, and you’d have some of the bestest speakers ever. A full Naim system. As it should be.

SL2s too small to fill my room> remember Chris Koster (of NANA)? He has been to my house. I was at an audio show in NY prob 15 yrs ago- whenever the SL2s were first released. I saw him at the show and asked about what he thought the SL2s would sound like in my room. His comment- "you need DBLs to fill your room- the SL2s are not large enough"
I know a lot of forum members don't like Focal speakers. But in my room the 1038bes work well in many ways. Are they perfect? Of course not. My system sounds really good most of the time. Hence after reading the above posts I will likely keep my system just the way it is. Might consider a 555PS if I see a s/h one. SL cables would be tempting but I have never heard them and frankly the price scares me- I would need approx. 18-20 ft speaker cables!
Thanks all, david
I've got you beat David- about 25 ft in my case ! Stick with the Olives I would say but keep your eye out for those DBL's - they do come up at very reasonable $....Getting them home is another matter altogether though

just try an SL interconnect first. Nice little step up in my system for sensible money. Simple to borrow and try one.

OP, I would either stick with what you've got or go 552/500 - both sets have a synergy that just works.
That said, I made the same move to a 552/500 and I am not always sure I actually prefer the newer stuff, to the extent that I have been wondering about trying to hear my sources (very much changed since I had the 52/135) with the older kit, but it is not easy...
It Sounds to me as if your very happy with what you have and so I would stick with it.
I could probably fit two or even three of my living rooms inside yours and I know the difficulty I had with speakers admittedly for very different reasons so don’t tempt fate you may well end up changing one thing and then having to change everything
If we are suggesting (wisely) Dibbles, then how about the big Kudos Titans ?
Totally agree

Mark, I’ll be home Saturday afternoon
u can drop the Titans off - I’ll even pour you a tall one ...
seriously, I’m sticking with what I have- no Kudos dealers near me anyway.
olive rules!
Can't blame me for trying David
Be well,
Mark
I'm late coming to Olive but I personally would not go back very easily a streamer perhaps or maybe a little UQ for a second system.
