PRaT across the NAIT line of amps
Posted by: echobase on 17 October 2018
After hearing a Nait 5si driving a pair of Dynaudio X18s at my dealer, I was impressed enough to sell my Hegel H160 with the intention to switch to Naim. For my Dynaudio speakers, I'll need at least the XS2, or perhaps even the SN2, to power them. I'm trying to find a dealer that has these available to audition. Are the XS2 and SN2 as good with pace, rhythm, and timing as the 5si? Or do you give up some of this in exchange for a deeper, more insightful presentation as I imagine those two offer? I like spirited guitar and drum rock. Thanks.
They are all fantastic amps and will all drive the Dynaudios the excite range is a fantastic vfm I had the X32's great speakers. Out of the three Naits you have mentioned I would choose either SN2 or Nait XS2 of the two I have only heard a Nait XS2 which was a really enjoyable listen with Guru QM10 plenty of PRAT.
there was a comparo done by Forum member Jan Erik Nordoen
maybe it will turn up in a search
ofcourse - audition in your home setting is the best thing - always..
I have owned the Naim Nait 5i-2 and moved onto SN2
The Naim Nait 5i-2 is a very charming amplifier in the right room.
The SN2 likes better recordings and a better source.
so you need to consider the source aspect too..
all amps like better sources but some amps like it more then others.
Having said that i am quite happy with my SN2
( I havent moved on my Naim Nait 5i-2 - its sleeping in my attic )
:-))
dont mean to confuse you..
Hi. +1 to the importance of the source and auditioning for yourself, preferably in your home and system. That being said, I'd take a sh Nac 202 Nap 200 (DR) over a new SN2 (if that's the budget) anytime.
I went from a Nait 5i to a Supernait 2. The sound will be very familiar moving from the smaller Nait to the bigger one. You get more of everything with the SN2, including Prat. If you liked the 5Si, you will most likely love the XS2 or the SN2.

Completely agree on the getting more of everything part. I made the same move, from a 5si to SN2 and lost nothing but gained a lot (as it should be). Ultimately I ended up with replacing the SN2 with 200DR/202, which was yet another improvement. If going the integrated route and on a budget, or wanting to spend money on the source side of things, I'd say the XS2 is probably the sweet post.
There are 2 comments here on the 202/200DR being an improvement over the Supernait 2. My experience is only with the 202/200 (non-DR) and Nait XS. To specifically address your question, the PRaT of the 202/200 is superior to the Nait XS to my ears. The changes in transients are better captured on the 202/200 and for this reason it sounds *faster*(ie. better pace, rhythm and timing) than the Nait XS.
The Nait XS sounds more romantic and mellow for those who like this sort of presentation.
We had the original Nait5i and it was a total snore with the nSats at our house. We got rid of it because it felt lifeless in our room unless we turned it way up.
We love the NaitXS. Ours is 7 years old. The NaitXS has an active preamp and that makes all the difference. The FlatcapXS elevates it further. This is a winning small system which sounds like a big system and is a great value. It works so well with the nSats, you just can't believe it would all fit in the front passenger seat of your car. I feel certain the new NaitXS2 continues in the same vein. The Atom is smaller yet but I have had no experience with it.
You can go up much higher but the steps get bigger from here, and you can stay at this level for a long time. We have.
My 282/250DR and Confidence C2 Platinum boogie very nicely. No lack of PRaT whatsoever MY toes are tapping as I type..
As did my UnitiQute and Contour S1.4 some years ago.
I think you'll find Naim and Dynaudio play very well together across both their respective ranges.
"PRaT" has as much to do with the source material, speakers, room acoustics and personal preference as it does with the amp.
Attempting to rate some ambiguous measure of musicality across a line of amps is about as useful as trying to describe why someone should like your favorite food.
Joerand
You ate right about the source material
But given the same source and same room I would expect the Naim amps to be more pratty
:-))
Not that other amps are not enjoyable but the OP is asking about prat across the series of Naim integrated which is a valid question IMV
Did a comparison, I stacked my old Nait 5i-2 on top of my SN2, same setup, cables, source etc..
Nait 5i-2 is a bit leaner, perhaps more flat in its presentation as opposed to SN2. Other than that, fairly similar to be honest. But as stated, SN2 gives you more of everything.
Both are excellent, PRaT!!
(Audiovector SR3 Avantgarde, so easy to drive.)
I’ve gone from a Nait 5si to an XS2 and now on a 202/200DR, and have also tried the supernait 2.
I’ve found that they all have the family PRAT, the SN2 has a much warmer and beefier sound compared to the others
As you move up the range you gain more detail but still keep the pace. The XS2 was a lot more open and detailed than the 5si, with clearer vocals and imaging. A nice smooth and very listenable sound. I found the supernait 2 lovely and punchy in the bass, instantly likeable but ended up going for the 202/200 separates for the extra detail and openness and when buying used it wasn’t that much more over the supernait 2.
The extra power of the sn2 will work well with rock
FWIW - I have owned the NAIT XS 2 and currently the SN2. Both are wonderful amps and believe you would be happy with either. There are discussions on the older threads where you will find members who prefer the XS 2 while others prefer the SN2. Then their is the next step of sounding better with a power supply or without. The search function can be a valuable source of information if you have the time and some patience.
I have chosen to stick with the Integrated amplifier vs moving to seperates to keep a low box count. Currently have a NDX > SN2 > Ovator S-400 configuration and it works well for me.
Good luck with your decision.
