PowerSupply and prep for Cisco

Posted by: Iver van de Zand on 20 October 2018

Dear all,

I bought a second hand Cisco WS-C2960G-8TC-L which will arrive in a few days. It will replace my current Netgear switch. My questions are:

- am I correct I need to ask the seller to re-set it to Factory settings. Are there any other specific settings/tweaks I need to do, or can I just plug in the various devices and "go"?

- I consider to buy a 15V Ifi iPower as powersupply to the Cisco. Is this a good way to go or is the internal powersupply in the Cisco good enough. Is a 15v Ifi iPower sufficient or should I go for a model with higher voltage?

I base myself on this thread where [@mention:1566878603876589] , [@mention:56335183628232089] and [@mention:68159343997754055] had a good discussion n the 2960

thanks Iver

The 2960 connects directly to the mains using a 'kettle' lead.

Yes ask for a factory reset, they may be using it already in factory reset mode. Yes just a normal kettle lead. When it arrives plug it in, wait for it to go through a routine of flashing lights. When it has stopped flashing I then start connecting Ethernet leads.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful replies !

I don't understand the word "Kettle Lead" .... do you mean that the Cisco is plugged directly into a wall-socket and I should not buy an additional good quality powersupply like Sbooster of Ifi Ipower? That would be good news; some money saved :-)

Yes plugged directly into a wall socket and has the standard electrical power socket on the Cisco end, same type you would have on naim equipment, Blu-ray player etc

Nearly all 2960s have a built in PSU. It’s a decent one which I would say was electrically less noisy that an iFi iPower, so I wouldn’t worry about it. You may need to buy a lead, as they are often supplied without one.

If it was been reset to factory defaults, just plug it in and use it as if it was an unmanaged switch.

As the others say a regular IEC or ‘kettle’ lead is all that is required for that model of switch.

Get the reset applied before delivery, although there are guides on how to reset yourself if required..it’s not difficult.

When the switch is in default factory supplied mode it acts as a regular unmanaged switch.. you don’t need to do anything.

if you know how to connect to the switch and know how the basic steps of console configuration, again google can help, there are optimisations one can do specifically for the Naim streamers, control point and media servers/NAS on the subnet - they don’t have to be all physically connected to the switch for some of the optimisations. These optimisations are for usability and responsiveness for powerup and Naim app discovery speed and reliability for larger networks as opposed to SQ.
