Totem speakers

Posted by: Rotifer217 on 21 October 2018

I was wondering if anyone has advice on totem speakers, in particular Hawk and Forest.  I currently have a NAC202, NAP200DR, Hicap, NAPSC setup and am interested in the totem range.  I'm keen on the Forest but a bit concerned that it may be one step too far for my set up, and that the Hawk may be a better choice.  I can trial the Hawks but not the Forest.  Any views would be appreciated.

I have both, on two systems. I run Hawks off a UC2/NAP100 and Forest Signatures off a Nova and both run fine. The Hawks also run fine off the Nova and the Forests will certainty handle much more too. The Forest would run fine on your sytem I think and have a much fuller soundstage and depth over the Hawks, though the Hawks are a lovely speaker too. Is that confusing?

With the Forest, there is the original and the Signatures, the later having a more natural top end. Both speakers take an eternity to play in, so be patient with a new pair.

Sorry, should check room size to. My Forest are in a large open plan lounge etc, the Hawks a small media room. The Forests need a bit more air to move too.

Please do a quick serach on the forum, there has been a lot of comments on the Hawk and Forest loudspeakers - both will be OK at the end of a NAP200DR.

If I only could get my hands on a pair of second hand Forest ...

Get Forest Sigs budget allows. Forest can get a bit harsh sounding at times, at least mine did, but Sigs have done away with that issue from what I’ve been told.

I have Hawks on a NAP 250 DR and 272 source.  They sound great but need constrained as I have already blown a speaker.  The bass is excellent and sound fairly mellow but also foot tapping.

Love Totems too. Have had Hawks and Forests (originals) running through 112/150 combo then 272/250DR combo.

Second what Giomak says - I've blown 2 drivers on the Hawks too so moved to the Forests. Only issue with them was a harsh treble at higher volumes which Mike Sullivan mentioned in previous threads, has been overcome now with the Forest Signatures.

Forest Signatures here in cherry, had the "original" Forests but the Sigs are much better.

have them biwired/amped  from a Linn Akurate C4200.

I have briefly tried the Totem Model 1 with my 202/200 for several weeks about 5 or 6 years ago. Lively, forward and exuberant speaker but ultimately lacking in refinement and sounding a little hot in the treble. I presume the Hawk and Forest Signatures are sonically superior. The Totems are rather nice sounding speakers with an engaging 3-dimensional sound.

i replaced Linn  Kabers  Tri Aktiv with the original pair of Forests after auditioning them at my local dealer.

Totem had a room at a Scottish hifi show outside Edinburgh and i was impressed by their performance.

they have a high "WAF" factor and when pushed a wee bit they sure rock n roll

For sure, my wife was happy with the Forests. The Focal Kanta’s were a flat out, no!

I use Arros on the end of a Nait 2 and Rega Apollo-R in a second system. This is a killer little set up...
