Noise Cancelling Headphones

Posted by: Moog on 24 October 2018

I need a pair of wireless noise cancelling headphones of which £200 is being funded by an insurance company.   The purpose is to block out noise at work with white noise to help me concentrate.  I was hit, head on by a transit van back in Feb and my brain's speed processing is impaired making it difficult to do more than one thing at a time.  It's amazing how much it helps with the Grado's (S80) but the wire at work is a pain.   Hence the need for wireless and proper noise cancelling.

I'm looking at the Sony  WH-9000N h.ear.  But being the music snob that I am, i'm wondering to fund the rest and go for Sony WH- 1000XM2 at £130 more.  I tested both at John Lewis but it's hard to make a judgement about sound quality over a mediocre Pharrell Williams track.  'Happy' it wasn't.  My question is with wireless and noise cancelling technology inbuilt would the sound never compare to my old (1997) Sennheiser HD600's.  Which is what i'm hoping for if I paid the extra money.

I had a home demo of the B & W PX yesterday for use with a Panasonic TX, Blu-ray compatible. Should be in your budget. Well built, relatively heavy and the lack of cable a bonus. Hi-Fi News 2018 Yearbook liked them. Have a listen!

+1 for PX. I use a pair and am very happy with them. Give them a listen. If the device you are connecting to supports Aptx hd and you have cd quality music on the device then the px will deliver near cd quality reproduction. Even when listening to MP3 at 320 or less they sound good to me.

Have a look at Bose Quietcomfort 35 II. As far as combination of ease of use, sound quality and effectivness of noise cancelling, Bose are a hard act to beat.

I have the Sony 1000 and like them a lot.  Had Bose before this and they were also good.  Those would be my picks

Another owner of the B&W PX - I really like them, and are my default headphones for travelling and working in a noisy office.  You can set the level of noise cancellation in the iOS or android app.

Many thanks for your replies.  Checked out the Bose (which were the most comfortable) but was put off by reviews which mention that long term quality was not good.  I tend to avoid public reviews as there is always someone who will complain about a product, but as it was recurring complaint it influenced my decision.  Not considered B&W so I will check them out.

I have had the Bose for a couple of years, no problems at all.

Sony MDR-1000X offer good noise cancelling, are wireless and pretty good sound quality, I believe they have a revised model out now. In fact i am using them in the office right now for a bit of peace!

Sony 1000 MDR either the X2 or new X3, use them for travel, sound is good, but the noise cancelling is a real saviour.

In the past when I flew more I had two solutions for this. I had my Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones which worked pretty well. But I also used my Shure in Ears at that point in time the SE535's and now the SE846, as they also in general close of very well.

Channel 5's Gadget Show had a 'review' of three - the Bose, some Sony ones and those newish ones that 'stick something into your ear'. I think it concluded for the Bose.

This is unlikely to sway you greatly, but might be worth looking up.

Good luck with finding a suitable solution!

I too have had the Bose for a couple of years and they are great. Like most I believe, they cut out engine noise etc, but voices can still get through.

Just watched.  Really useful it seems you can't go wrong with either Bose or Sony.  (The other headphones were the Nura, The Nuraphone/G2).   Will try out the B&W PX before making a decision.

X3 is the öne to buy

Hi Moog - take care with what you go for if you want 'white noise' alone. Some NC variants turn off if not plugged into a source which may frustrate the main aim for you. I realised this just in time before buying the Sony WH1000M2 which, I believe, turn off without music coming through. I just got a real bargain on 2 pairs of the new WH1000M3s which do stay on without music - I wanted this for sleeping on long haul flights without music. They are very balanced musically and the adjustable NC is as good, or better, than Bose.

My MDR-1000x does switch off if no signal is present in wireless mode, one way to prevent this is to plug a 3.5mm plug in the hard wired input. just a plug without a cable!
