Naim Uniti - Fault 10 - what is this?

Posted by: Dinarius on 26 October 2018

Naim Uniti was working fine until an hour ago.

I switched from CD to iRadio - no problem.

I then used the remote to switch from the iRadio station to a DAB station. Nothing happened. The display read, "Please Wait".

I tried an FM preset; same thing. "Please Wait".

I then turned off the mains power for a couple of minutes and powered it back on.

The display now read, "Fault 10", and I can't access anything, not even the CD and iRadio which were working.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

A quick google search gives this from a forum, looks as though it may be describing your issue:

"DAB chip fault, apparently can be triggered by storms, dodgey antenna amp etc. quick perusal of the Naim Forum indicates that if turning it off and back on doesn't clear it going into the settings (spanner on remote) and reseting all in factory settings will correct unless there is a hardware fault."

Many thanks!

Unfortunately, I can't access anything via any button on the console or the remote control.

The screen stays at "Fault 10".

The second problem in 12 months with what is an eight-year-old unit. Annoying.

Surprised your Google search didn't throw up anything on this forum. Am I the first? Surely not.

Thanks again.

There was one on this forum but it was along the lines of "Give Naim a ring" "I have and it's going back to them".

Have a look at the non-link link I posted (sorry I forgot to translate it to a url) - someone got this fixed for free out of warantee as "it shouldn't happen" - not saying you will, but worth ringing. This would suggest it's very rare so you may not be first, but not far off.

I'd have thought the DAB chip (if that is what has failed) is on a DAB/FM module so replacement may not be too expensive. I have no idea what's inside a Uniti so I could be (very) wrong !!

This may not fix issue but this should factory reset:

1. power off
2. press and hold play button on front panel for 6-7secs while powering on
3. Press mute button (if your screen was working you would have a prompt to do so)
4. Wait. you won't see factory reset progress unless it clears the fault.

May not work, but worth a shot to get your music playing again for the weekend! If not then I'm afraid back to customer service as that's the only trick i know of.

Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks.

Tried that.

After a few seconds of pressing the Play button, the screen started flashing amber, with the letters FO RO and No Disc written underneath.

No prompt to press Mute.

It’s still flashing FO RO, coz I haven’t powered it off.

Any I can try while it’s still flashing, or should I power off and head to the repair guy?!

 Thanks.

Sorted! (hopefully)

I turned off the Uniti (nothing else would stop the screen flashing) and turned it on again.

It’s working perfectly. All the radio presets are still there.

Only thing I can say is that before I got the Fault 10 warning, I had been playing a CD quite loud, before changing (unsuccessfully) to DAB radio.

Looks like restarting holding the Play button is the solution.

Thanks.

Yes you won’t get the mute prompt because you’re in fault mode. So you are flying blind to an extent. But sounds promising so far. Just try the steps again with a single press of mute  after the power on with play held.

If no joy after trying that a few times I’m afraid you’ll have to go back to a dealer/customer support I’m afraid.

Great! Glad that worked. Enjoy!

Hi

I too have this as an intermittent fault on my UQ1, with ‘Radio Module’ coming up under Fault 10.

I am not sure how I managed to get it to work again, but I think it was after turning it off and on a couple of times, so the idea of doing a reset is something I will try when it happens again.

When I rang Naim, I was told that they were not sure what the fault was, but to send it back it would cost £350 to be looked at, which I thought was a little steep and probably about the value of the unit.

I don’t use it as much as I should, so I was in the habit of turning the unit off, with the fault occurring when it was turned back on. I thought that this might be causing the problem, so I leave it on standby now and it has been fine for a few weeks now, so that might be a clue.

I just tried a DAB station and I got the Please Wait message again.

This time, since I could access the unit, I opted to try a factory reset; it went straight to Fault 10.

This time, restarting while holding the play button again brought the flashing FO RO message. But, restarting after this message did not restore the unit like it did yesterday. It went back to the Fault 10 message.

So, it looks like the repair man.

Within the last year, a firmware update failed midstream and I had to send back the unit - it cost €400, which left me seriously underwhelmed. (I build my own computers, so I knew what I was at. The problem was the poor update process.)

Let’s see this time...
