A few questions about functionality of Star.

Posted by: iliria on 26 October 2018

Today I unboxed the Star and set it up and wanted to ask a few questions about its functionality please:

1. Apart from the initial set up do I need to keep it hardwired to the router with ethernet cable? Does hardwiring improve sound?

2. Should I use the provided speaker plugs or other banana plugs will do fine?

3. Is there a way to turn Bluetooth off?

4. Is there a way to turn screen completely off?

5. How do I get the bidirectional function of the remote to work?

6. Is there supposed to be a faint hum when on standby?

7. Do you guys use WAV or FLAC for ripping CDs?

8. Is there a way to change the length of time the remote backlight stay on for?

9. Is the latest firmware update 2.6.1?

1. Use whatever works best for your home and setup. I have an Atom and wireless sounds no different to hardwired, but hardwired is more reliable overall for connection and performance.

2. Naim recommends it you'll be fine. I have never used mine. It won't effect sq.

3. Yes in the input settings for the Naim app.

4. No.

5. It just works when you pair it to the Star. It should have promoted you at startup to pair the remote. If not you can repair it by factory resetting and follow the instructions on the screen of the Star.

6. This is common in some installations. It's often down to a dodgy device your mains. Something else is polluting the mains and your Star may be picking it up. Try unplugging other devices to work out what it is.

7. Flac. Others will argue that wave is better I have heard no difference on my Atom. Save the space and use Flac.

8. No I don't think there is.

9. Yes. 2.6.1.9754

I have gone through both resetting to factory settings and pairing the remote with the unit but the feature does not appear to work. Am I supposed to move the remote towards the unit and backwards to increasse/decreasse volume? Without pressing any buttons?

I think you misunderstanding what it means. The feature means if you change volume or input  on the unit  it will feedback to the remotes lights. That's all the feature does. It's not a motion control or anything.

If it works reliably over WiFi, fine, but wired connections are generally more reliable, and that’s what I’d use if at all possible.

The plugs Naim supply are generally the best ones to use at the amp end, and I think it’s worth the effort of getting then properly soldered on, depending on what you have now. The metal used is a close match  to the sockets, so if, say, you have gold plated plugs, I would definitely change them.

I’m not at home to check, but I think you can disable Bluetooth in Input Settings on the Naim app.

The screen will only turn off when the unit is in standby mode. Lots of people have complained about this, and I believe a firmware update is in the pipeline.

The level of hum will depend partly on mains quality. If server mode is enabled, the main transformer is still active in standby, so it will still hum.

Ah right. I have misunderstood indeed.

It's working well over wifi and i havent had any problems so far. However i do have the router close by (within 2m distance) so I could hardwire if it gave a better sound.

At the moment I am using gold plated banana plugs (Sewell). However I will change to the Naim plugs as soon as i can find out where I can get them soldered. I assume I can leave the gold plated banana plugs on the speaker end?

I hope Naim does offer the option to turn off the screen.

No you can't turn off the screen on a Star. It's been requested by many people and it's somewhere in Naim's development queue.

I doubt you will hear a significant difference using Ethernet instead of WiFi, but there’s no harm in trying it.

What speaker cable are you using? I would get the Naim plugs soldered on, a Naim dealer should be used to soldering Naim plugs properly. At the soraker end, I would use gold plated plugs if the terminals are gold plated.

If that is the case then i will probably go ahead with the wifi option rather than ethernet cable as I would rather reduce the amount of cables (if no major performance is gained).

I'm using Linn K20 speaker cable for now with Focal 714 floorstanders at the end of those. The speaker terminals are gold plated so that should be fine. I will find a Naim dealer in Cheshire to get the plugs soldered on at the other end of the cables.

I’m sure you’ll be able to find a Naim dealer in Chester, Manchester or wherever who can solder on the supplied plugs for you. I dare say they will try to sell you some NACA5 too!
