Dipping toes into vinyl

Posted by: Henkerino on 30 October 2018

Hello, I think this is something I'm confident you guys can help me with.

Finally totally satisfied with my Naim streaming setup which is frankly all I've ever used and will stay as most utilized playback..

Now dipping my toes into vinyl and I have in recent years sourced all my favorite albums (mostly 90's grunge/stoner rock)

Need advice on last missing parts to start out this journey.

Will very soon attempt to buy an old deck Systemdek IIX (early ver.) with a RB300 fitted w/o cart. (I don't want suggestions on other decks etc.)

Have already sourced two possible Stageline, both MM and MC (K: 100 uV) to go with my existing 202/HC/200

Question is which one to go for and which Cheap Cart. to start out with? (I have a wizard nearby who can then help with setup on the RB300..)

This TT will be wallmounted and with one of the said Stageline (powered by 202).

..And TT will more or less only(!) ever be played with loud grunge music. so: The more groove the better!

If you can stretch to it, how about a Denon DL110? I had one on a Systemdek IIX 900/Linn Akito nearly 25 years ago, and more recently another one on a Garrard 301/Rega RB202. After nearly a decade listening to Lyras, it was no hardship spending a year with the Denon.

Good suggestion, would be with the MM Stageline i presume (although it says it's a MC type).

If I'd wanted to go even cheaper, say max £100 what would that be?

I don’t have Stageline experience, but I used my Denons into MM inputs as they’re high output MCs. I don’t know about cheaper, but before my first DL110 I had a Linn K5, and the Denon was conclusively worth the extra.

If the Stageline you've sourced says "K" on it then it's for low output MC cartridges. Ideally you want a MM Stageline, which will usually say "N" on the back.

The Stageline N is a bit on the dark and earthy side, so works best with a lighter, brighter, groovier MM cartridge - the Audio Technicas usually being a great match.  There's a new range just out that must be well worth investigating, the AT-VM95 series.  There's a nice nude mounted elliptical version that comes in just under the ton...

The Systemdek IIX is a cracking starter deck and with the RB300 on board it's capable of a performance way beyond its modest price.

Perfect info, thanks!

The ad states it's a Stageline MM, then it's automatically the "N" type i guess?

With one DIN-output on the back the cable should be provided right? From Stageline it goes to 202 Aux 2 input 5-5 pin right? The HC that powers the 202 has nothing to do in this signal-chain if Im correct? Don't plan on getting more PSU's

Yes, the Stageline came with a SNAIC5 when supplied new, as that is what you will need to connect to the powered  AUX2 on the NAC202.  Best check with the seller that the SNAIC5 is indeed included.  Oh, and the SNAIC5 should be black, not grey...

It might also be worth checking that the inputs are phono on the Stageline too.
