The Oppo-203 as a network player
Posted by: nbpf on 30 October 2018
The Oppo-203 is, among other thinks, a network player. Connected to a Naim DAC via electrical or optical S/PDIF, it can deliver high resolution streams from LAN UPnP servers, Qobuz, Tidal, etc.
Has anyone compared the Oppo-203 as a network player to dCS, NDX2, DigiOne Signature or other established transports?
Would be interesting to know. I have my Oppo 205 connected to the 272/250DR/TXPS.

Just connect the S/PDIF output of your Oppo-205 to the S/PDIF input of your 272 and you'll know. If you do so, please report your findings!
I have my 205 connected to my NAC82(2 Hicaps/250/SBL'S) via the RCA analogue outs, sounds very good, the 205 apparently has a n excellent DAC with a selection of filters for you to amuse yourself. The control APP is limited but useable.

Sure one can use the internal DACs of the 203 and of the 205. But what about the performance of these devices when used as transports, e.g., as sources for a Naim DAC? How do they compare to dCS, NDX2, DigiOne Signature, etc.?
FWIW, my BDP-95 is not as good as my CD5X, at playing CDs, at par.

Sure, but we are talking of the Oppo 203 (or 205) as a network transport, not as a CD player.
“FWIW”; clearly not an answer to your question; offered as a reference point, according to my experience and unique sense of appropriateness.
That said, I have a 205 and nDAC/555DR. I shall report when I have tested more combinations. At the moment the 205 is overachieving into an AV2/NAP-V175 via a Sony LCD TV, separate from my main system.
Following with interest.

I confess the comparitve fiddliness of the streaming UI on other platforms I have tried has put me off, including iTunes (Apple, Pioneer and Marantz), B&O, Sony Smart TV, Sonos, Audirvana, Oppo, and even Squeezebox (though iPeng is a contender).
Naim isn’t perfect, either; but it is at the center of my Naim system, which gives it a unique edge.

I've connected using both analogue and digital. With SPDIF, I've only compared with the 272 (don't have other transport). I prefer the SQ from 272 eventhough I've added a LPS and a SR Blue to the 205. It's just a matter of personal preference.

I have no experience with iTunes, B&O, Sonos, Squeezebox and iPeng. I have a Sony smart TV but I mainly use it only occasionally to watch DCH concerts and DVDs.
The Oppo-203 is almost always off. I use it only to play blu-ray disks, dvd disks and, occasionally, a CD. In these cases, I typically control the 203 via its remote.
As control point, I use BubbleUPnP which I find to be slightly better than the Naim app. With BubbleUPnP one can stream contents from LAN servers, Tidal, Qobuz, etc. to no UPnP and OpenHome renderers in a seamless way.
A few days ago, the Oppo-203 was on and it immediately appeared in the renderers list in BubbleUPnP. That's why I came to the idea of using it as a network transport! I am going to compare it to the DigiOne Signature and report my findings.

Great, thanks for your feedback! I should be able to compare the Oppo-203 as an Ethernet to S/PDIF interface to the Allo DigiOne Signature this afternoon. More later. Best, nbpf
Another question re the Oppo -205...if this is connected to a network (via Ethernet ) should a Nova be able to “see” the Oppo ?..if so where would one find this...? Sorry if this a daft question
should add was thinking along these lines with a view to being able to play the odd cd via the Oppo on the main system which is in a different location.

I do not fully understand your question but the Oppo-203 (and certainly also the 205) is a UPnP/DLNA renderer. Thus, if you open a UPnP control point you will certainly see the Oppo and be able to select it. I certainly can do that that with BubbleUPnP and LinnKazoo. But you certainly will not be able to see the Oppo in the Naim app because the Naim app is not a UPnP control point.

Thank you!
The 203 and 205 should also be available as Roon endpoints.

Today I compared the Oppo-203 as an Ethernet to S/PDIF transport to the DigiOne Signature. Both the Oppo-203 and the DigiOne Signature were connected via two Naim DC-1 cables of the same length to my nDAC. The dirty side of the DigiOne Signature was powered with an ifi 5V/2.5A SMPS. The clean side was powered with an UpTone Audio LPS-1.2 at 7V.
The DigiOne Signature was clearly better: a more involving and at the same time more natural and transparent sound. The differences were particularly evident with vocal and piano music. Bravo Allo!

Interesting. Thanks for the update.
