Mains cable for power supply unit

Posted by: Tramat on 01 November 2018

Good evening, I have a doubt related to the mains cable for the power supply unit.

Considered that this external device converts and splits the alternate voltage to the continuous ones, for what it worth to spend money in expensive mains cable?.

Naim supplies with each power supply unit a common "computer style cable", quite cheap. Many owners suggest to upgrade the mains cable for expensive ones.

I am confused. Someone could explain me where is the truth , please? Cheers

There are many, many threads on mains cables that you may wish to read. You can also borrow a Powerline from your Naim dealer and discover whether it makes a difference, and whether you consider any difference represents value for money.

Good question Tramat.

A better mains cable is supposed to improve the performance of the power supply by either reducing/filtering high frequency interference on the electrical mains supply, or reducing mechanical vibration that travels up the cable into the power supply or by reducing the electrical resistance/impedance of the electrical supply.

For some users, the difference is huge, game changing, enormous. For most, there is a small, incremental improvement. Some hear no difference.

Despite the standard Naim cable and plug looking like a standard computer style cable, Naim has genuinely selected the cable and both connectors to be well engineered and better than most, so you end up paying hundreds of euros per cable for a “better” one.

Personally, I find that life is too short to worry about the last 1.5m of electrical supply when Naim has already thought about it, so I spend the money on vinyl, CDs and concerts instead.

Bedt regards, FT

Hi Tramat,

The reality is if you have a system that is any good it will let you hear any effects that a better or at least a more expensive cable might have. The rest is up to you really. If your ears let hear an improvement and you think it a worth while expense then do it and worry not what anyone else thinks or does. Personally I have replaced all my supplied cables for more expensive ones as I can hear the improvements the ones I chose to buy had.

Recently I had the chance to hear what three £6oo ones could do in my system, one on my streamer and one on my preamp. The result was the most amazing thing I have ever heard. Incidentally I put the third onto my Lingo3 turntable supply and even that had a positive effect which I still can't work out why or how it did it.

Sadly no way could I afford even one but my B in L bought two immediately. If I were you i would borrow one or two from your dealer and make up your own mind. A good tip is to listen to something simple like a quietly played acoustic guitar as playing something like a heavy rock band doesn't always show up anything especially if you are new to doing listening tests. Remember that even when you hear any differences you then have to sort out if those differences are improvements. They aren't all ways. Enjoy your listening sessions.

Good evening.  Thank you for your replies; wises and useful. I know that thousands of words have been written about the mains cables cords. I have focused my attention to my electronics: Naim Nac 282 powered by the Naim Super Cap and Naim Nap 300DR powered by its external power supply unit. I also know that inside the integrated amplifier the alternate voltage conversion to the continuous ones but the circuitry is integrated. In my configuration, as previously written, the power supply unit is separate from the preamplifier. Cheers
