Chrome Bumper light colours

Posted by: Stephen packer on 03 November 2018

As mentioned in a previous post I'm putting together a chrome bumper active system.

I have:
- NAC 62 (Green LED),
- HiCap x 2 (one red, one green LED),
- NAXO2 (Red LED),
- NAP 250x2 (Green lamps)

From the serial numbers for the LED products, these were all made between 1985 and 1987.  The 1987 products (NAC62, HiCap) had Green LEDs, the 1985/86 (NAXO2, HiCap) have red LEDs.

I must admit that the LED colour particularly on the NAXO2 is going to trouble me...  Less so on the HiCap because it's barely visible

However, I wouldn't want to get the LED colour changed *if* the NAXO2 was only ever made with red LEDs (probably).

So, my question is... were later NAXO2s produced with green LEDs?

Do they need a service?  Get the LEDs changed then for green ones.  Darran at Class A, Sheffield (Naim authorised) would be able to advise and help.

Yep - i'd change them (or as Guinnless suggests, get Darran to do this for you). Change them back later if you want to sell and remain authentic. My Nait 1 Red LED is as it should be from the factory, but i'd much prefer green...

Green arrived pretty late on in the CB range - around 86 IIRC. Many have had the LED colour changed come service time, so it matches up.

James, the later green LED NAIT also had some other minor changes, different fascia finish and a more stylised volume knob.

Interesting - thanks Richard.

Ah yes, a quick google shows the different volume knob. Still it's a classic looking bit of kit, even with the Red LED

Thanks. Looking at the serial numbers of the various devices I have, I think the hicap went green in at some point after mid-86 or '87.. Of course this is making an assumption that the 86 HiCap didn't have its green led changed to red!

I think the HiCap will get the LED changed at the service next month together with the NAC62 and NAXO2, the NAP250s are being serviced this month.

The NAC62 and (recently serviced) HiCap are sounding very nice into my old NAP250 bolt down and my 1991 SBLs.   Shame the SBLs are so late or the hifi would all be older than my children!  (ignore the DAC.,,)

I wonder what the sonic differences of green over red might be?
