HiFi systems on TV?

Posted by: Mike1951 on 05 November 2018

I can only recall a couple of instances in telly dramas where the inside of someone’s house has a music hifi system in it. Plenty of cheap ‘one-piece’ bookshelf stacks and the like (viz the recent ‘Wanderlust’) but no real separates-with-speakers systems.

The two that come to mind are in an early ‘Morse’, I spotted a Rega Planar in the grumpy detectivists’ lounge and in the first series of ‘Elementary’, Holmes had a Macintosh setup lurking in the corner - green-glowing uv meters agogo.

I guess these days where most people, especially youngsters, are listening to music via their mobiles and bud speakers, our obsession is even more niche than ever, so perhaps the lack of representation in fictional domestics is actually more accurate than not...

Any other spottings of this rare beast that you know of?

I recall seeing what I thought was a Rocksan Xerxes in one early Morse, where I seem to recall he was playing some Wagner. I was surprised by his poor record handling though from someone who was supposed to be a music lover.

I also remember seeing two or three Naim boxes stacked on top of each other in another TV drama, but I don't recall which one.

Yup,  Morse had a Xerxes & think I spotted the hint of a Rega on one prog & some odd flashes of Naim.  Later series seemed to go through a few changes of Japanese,  including those one piece midi junk boxes  ???      (BBC seemed to think no one will notice,  but they overlook the Naimish at their peril)

The young Morse (Endeavour) has an Alba

Sorry to hear that Nigel,  perhaps an extra layer of those nice looking socks in your latest room pics will help.

Seriously,  I was not a fan of that series,  unlike another person not so far away.   But hifi spotting is not on her radar

That was it. It was actually my wife who spotted it.

I guess this first one doesn't count,  it is about hifi isn't it  ???     Any idea's about the record deck ?

I think there have been lots of missed opportunities in TV adaptations, thinking in particular of Banks and Rebus where music features heavily in the books.

My intriguing one is the All 4/Channel 4  series Walter Presents where audio equipment can be seen in a number of programmes from different countries. In particular, Professor T regularly puts a record on and just about all you can see is a bright blue phono cartridge.

In the first Tomb Raider film, Lara Croft has Michell Gyrodec, I think.  It's possible I'm muddling this up and it was actually a different film, but pretty sure.

Hmm, curiosity after posting the above provoked a little research, and revealed I was right about the film, but wrong about the turntable.  Apparently it was a Clearaudio Master Reference.

ITV used to run a programme intro with a guy in a record shop who just pulled the LP out of its inner sleeve to "inspect". Just had his hands all over playing surfaces.

Hi-fi is a niche product. Look at some expensive houses for sale on the internet. £4 million or more. You will likely see a home cinema room, but no audio.

I very clearly remember an actor called Jesse Birdsall unboxing a load of Linn kit in something I watched yonks ago - I think it was Eldorado (the failed soap).....

**SNIP**

Ian Rankin who wrote the Rebus books worked for Hi-Fi Review magazine for a few years. I remember his last article said he was leaving to see if he could make it as a novelist, he did pretty well.

We're fans of Westworld on HBO, and they use music pretty effectively.  (The player piano in the old-time western saloon and brothel has a roll that plays Black Hole Sun. You can find it on YouTube).

The Stones "Play With Fire" is used in several places in ways that tie together. (Westworld is all about themes that tie together . . . ) including playing on a kinda cool-looking all-white Pro-Ject tt.  Pro-Ject has released the all-white version to the public now (it debuted on Westworld).

The Morse system was a Xerxes, Naim Nait and I think Spendor speakers?

In the Comic Strip Bad News Tour the bass player in the band Colin Grigson (Rik Mayhall)  had a Lp12 - Naim 32 -Hicap 250 also a Nakamichi LX 5 cassette in his bedroom as he was still living at home with his parents......a man of fine taste.

One programme that features the owners hifi quite prominently is "Elementary" from CBS .Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) is shown favouring a McIntosh turntable and amps and although his floorstanding speakers are spotted in many a scene I have not been able to identify them.He is often featured playing different genres of music at loud volumes to "aid" his thought processes.Excellent product placement.

In the latest series of Unforgotten (ITV) one of the characters had a 272 on display in his London home’s office. Couldn’t see anything else (power amp or speakers)!

This is the turntable from TV series Lost. This was used frequently in The Hatch, an underground bunker on the island. I am sure someone will be able to identify it.

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I know exactly which model turntable this is - I have had two of them!  It's a Technics SL-Q3.  The last one I had went to my partner's daughter along with a Technics SU-V3 amp and some B&W DM100i speakers - it has made for a great vinyl starter system.

Douglas.

I have also noticed this, I don’t think I have ever seen a hifi system in any house advertised online. Do estate agents advise people to remove them to make the room look bigger?

Or are they, as I suspect, a bit of a rarity nowadays.

There’s a fairly large one on Family Guy though.

The Sota turntable is featured in “House “while he sits in his office

and a vpi tnt is in Robert redfords apartment in “indecent proposal “

Possibly outside the OP’s definition, but presuming it’s also on television the current Mini Countryman hybrid cinema ad has an LP12 / Ekos (I think) / V15 (I think) in it.

I remember the record player in A Clockwork Orange and I thought it was a Mitchell Gyrodec, but I just looked it up on the Internet and I found out that it was called a Mitchell Transcriptor. I like the micro cassette version of Beethoven 9 complete with mini DG label! The amp makes a nice thump when he turns it on as well.

I thought I saw a Roksan Xerxes and Naim Nait in an episode of Morse, so I am agreeing with the post above. The first episode of Morse (The Dead of Jericho) was about a record player manufacturer, and I think they used a Roksan Xerxes for that as well.

Was it a Michell Gyrodec in Robert Redford's pad in Indecent Proposal?
