HiFi systems on TV?

Posted by: Mike1951 on 05 November 2018

I can only recall a couple of instances in telly dramas where the inside of someone’s house has a music hifi system in it. Plenty of cheap ‘one-piece’ bookshelf stacks and the like (viz the recent ‘Wanderlust’) but no real separates-with-speakers systems.

The two that come to mind are in an early ‘Morse’, I spotted a Rega Planar in the grumpy detectivists’ lounge and in the first series of ‘Elementary’, Holmes had a Macintosh setup lurking in the corner - green-glowing uv meters agogo.

I guess these days where most people, especially youngsters, are listening to music via their mobiles and bud speakers, our obsession is even more niche than ever, so perhaps the lack of representation in fictional domestics is actually more accurate than not...

Any other spottings of this rare beast that you know of?

Dr House had Duevel Bella Luna speakers at home, not sure about the rest of the system.

Anyone know what Harvey's office turntable system was in Suits? His vinyl collection was a prominent part of the office.

There's a NAD 3020 on a cabinet in Humans season 1.

Oddly enough, local TV dramas here in Japan it is the other way around. Almost all of them have some proper gear in the background in one recurring location or another. Often vintage Sansui or Luxman but anything is possible. Tube amps and giant JBL or Tannoy speakers are a common set dressing.

Opening credits of The Beiderbecke Affair, a 1980s light-hearted British mystery/comedy/drama & the first part in The Beiderbecke Trilogy, shows a Pioneer turntable, an amp and some headphones,

Opening credits of The Beiderbecke Tapes shows a tape deck & some headphones

The funniest systems on tv (if you looked closely) used to be things like a tuner sitting on top of a receiver or a free-standing turntable magically creating music with nothing else around it.

Gyrodec appeared a few times in the film Looper, red felt mat with an AT95 cartridge.

I believe Hayden Christensen had a full Meridian setup in the rather abysmal teleportation movie, Jumper.

Recent American import "Sharp Objects" had a full Sim Audio Moon separates fronted by a VPI turntable.Looked pretty impressive.

In early CSI (Las Vegas original); Grissom has a MacIntosh system in his home. Wallander (Swedish TV Krister Henriksson series) had a NAD system iirc.

Generally I've noticed more hifi in set dressing over the last few years. River with Stellan Skarsgård for one had some older kit just as set dressing; and as someone mentioned Unforgotten had some.

More stuff in films: Daredevil had a Rotel system.

I remember the record player in A Clockwork Orange and I thought it was a Mitchell Gyrodec, but I just looked it up on the Internet and I found out that it was called a Mitchell Transcriptor. I like the micro cassette version of Beethoven 9 complete with mini DG label! The amp makes a nice thump when he turns it on as well.

I thought I saw a Roksan Xerxes and Naim Nait in an episode of Morse, so I am agreeing with the post above. The first episode of Morse (The Dead of Jericho) was about a record player manufacturer, and I think they used a Roksan Xerxes for that as well.

I saw the film in Glasgow (just before it was banned around 2 weeks after its release) when I was a student in the 70s, and was awestruck by the Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference turntable the main character owned. I just had to have one, and so after a few of months of a vacation job between University degree courses was the proud owner of a Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference turntable (made under license by Michell), Transcriptors 9" Fliud arm (a real pain to set up well) and a Shure V15/111 cartridge. I held on to the turntable (although unused for around 30 years) until I finally sold it a couple of years ago. Of course, I also purchased the Soundtrack album by Walter (soon to be Wendy) Carlos which was revolutionary at the time and which I thought (and still do) was absolutely marvellous. I would also recommend the two 'Switched on Bach' albums by Walter/Wendy Carlos if you can track them down.

I can't remember the make of amp he used in the film - I bought a Cambridge P50/II to go with mine.

A wonderful device, and much better looking although not nearly as good from a sound quality perspective as the Michell Orbe I now own.

I recall seeing some pretty cool looking speakers in the second series of Billions, i think they were BeoLab 90 and were shown a few times in the apartment of Damien Lewis' character.....

Jazz loving detective Harry Bosch (tv series Bosch) had a system which was shown from time to time. I've read elsewhere that there was a Mackintosh tube amp, marantz deck and tuner, and some Ohm 4 or 5 speakers.
