HDX to Qnap backup.

Posted by: dave marshall on 07 November 2018

Hi,

Having recently had my HDX off to Naim for a service, which included the fitting of a new 2Tb drive, I now need to sort out the HDX automatically backing up the music to my QNAP nas.

I assume I do this via the nServe app on my MacBook Pro, but I can't readily see how to go about things.

Any help from HDX / QNAP experts out there would be most welcome, though I will need step by step instructions, in view of my limited knowledge of all things computery and networking.

Thanks in advance,

Dave.

This "might" help but it's a long time since set mine up.

Go into "Maintenance" in n-Serve

On the left side of the pane scroll down to "Music Repositories"

Then click on "Network Shares" if your QNAP appears in that list, select it and click on the "Use As Back-up" button on the right of the window.

If it hasn't appeared, click on "Add New" and then enter the path to your QNAP along with any user name and password that you may have to enter to access that drive.

The path will be the IP address of the QNAP NAS, in the format \\192.168****\HDX_Backup (where your own IP address is entered in place of 192.168.***** and \HDX_Backup being the destination folder on the QNAP where you want your backup to be stored.

You can use 'Qfinder' (a download from the QNAP website) to find the IP address of your QNAP, or if you know how to log into your router, it should be listed under DCHP Clients (everything which is connected to your router)
Or simply use a free app on a smart phone to search the network for the QNAP's IP address.

Once added, you can select the drive, then click on the "Use As Backup" button on the right of the window.

I think the drive/backup store folder then only appears in the "Network Stores" section of n-Serve - but it's years since I last did this, so could easily be mistaken!

Many thanks, Blythe,

I'll have a crack at this tomorrow ........... fingers crossed!

Just to say that if you are going to use the IP address to locate the QNAP like Blythe suggests then you will need to fix it or it may change next time you restart your router or the time after that and the backup will then quietly and invisibly fail (for you to discover only when you need it).

best

Sadly, it seems that the days when you could call Naim support and talk to someone with an in-depth understanding of how to do this stuff are over. Still, the legacy of that era is that there is still at least some useful information out there. What you need to know is covered in the HDX instruction manual (remember them!) and this QNAP setup guide, which is rather dated now, but still worth a read.

Follow these instructions to the letter and you should be OK.
