NAC 62 - Hicap - NAP 150 connections

Posted by: portway on 08 November 2018

Hi, Sorry to begin by posting a problem, I suppose I must be doing something wrong. I have just bought a NAC 62 Ser No: 55252 and a Hicap Ser No: 181385 to partner a NAP 150 I purchased some time ago. I can play my turntable when the NAC 62 is connected directly to the NAP 150 using the blanking plug and 4 pin snaic. However, when I connect through the Hicap all I get is silence. I know that the Hicap is ok as it was demonstrated to me on purchase. I have been (I hope) very careful to connect the both 4 pin and the 5 pin snaics up correctly and the power switch turns both the Hicap and the NAC 62 on connected this way. Could some kind person possibly shed some light on this problem as I am really looking forward to hear the system properly.

Try using one of the other 4 pin sockets instead of socket 3. If no joy check with a multimeter the continuity of each pin.

Thank you for your reply, I know that the 4 pin lead is ok as it drives the NAP 150 directly from the NAC 62. I am a bit suspicious of the 5 pin lead as on belling ot out it seems that only pins 1, 3, and screen are connected. The diagram on the Hicap assigns all five pins so maybe the lead is incorrect.

Is the 5 pin a genuine SNAIC ? I'm thinking you could have a fake one modified for power only.  Check the labelling on the cable.

I'd agree with Guinnless - if it's 1,3 (and 5) then that's just the two 24V rails and ground. Ch1 and 2 are on 2 and 4.

I'd check the seller has provided you a proper SNAIC5.

Have had a little think about this. It looks like the 5 pin snaic is a "power only" lead as used in more conventional designs. So, If this is used to power the NAC 62 will there be a problem if the 4 pin snaic is used to connect directly to the power amp from the NAC 62 as the power amp is also providing power to the NAC 62? Should the power wires in the 4 pin snaic be disconnected and would this possible solution be a good idea anyway?

You need a proper SNAIC 5 cable. Plenty for sale if you Google. Get the proper item. ☺

You cannot discuss SNAIC cable modifications on the Naim forum.

Thanks for the advice - not so much the attitiude! Guess which forum I will no longer follow.

Portway, you'll need a proper SNAIC5.  This takes 2 x 24V DC power from the Hicap to power the NAC62, and also takes signal from the NAC62 into the Hicap, which then provides three stereo pre-outs on DIN4s. You then take the pre-amp signal from the Hicap to the NAP150 via a SNAIC4. If you wish to know why Naim route the signal through the power supply, they explain thus;

The absolute earth reference for the system is the reference for the pre-amp, which is the SUPER-CAP, HI-CAP or FLAT-CAP earth. The signal is routed from the pre-amp to the power supply using the same interconnect that takes the power feed from the power supply to the pre-amp. It also connects the two earths together.

This minimises differential voltages caused by interfering electric or magnetic fields being generated between the power feed, signal and earth, so maintaining the correct relationship between signal and earth inside the power supply. The power amp is connected to the properly referenced signal at the power supply output.
