Upgraded to DR, Great Service by Naim

Posted by: ROOG on 08 November 2018

I purchased a used Nap 300 back in the summer and found it to be a rather disappointing experience. It just didn't have the pep of even my modest SU. Wallowing bass and rolled off highs compared to the SU. I wondered why I had bought the thing! (purchased un-seen)

So I made enquires with Naim Technical and they (Phil) explained the DR upgrade and service process for the 300 and I decided that I would never be satisfied until I had given it a go.

So I booked it in through my local dealer and just two weeks after it went in it was back with me running my system again. I am very glad that I did because the amp now sounds just as I had originally hoped.

My experience of Naim service has been amazing.

Not had much chance to listen to it fully, but from first impressions it sounds very good.

Just thought i would share my experience, if your old amp has lost "a bit of spring from it's bungee" a service or an up grade may be what it needs.

You’ll be even more pleased in three or four weeks when the 300 has properly burned in!

......but enjoy the journey!

I would like to be able to put a few hours of music on the clock, but I am in competition with the boss who wants to watch, Eastenders, and what ever drivel is on the box.

start in earnest over the week end perhaps

Eastenders?!

You have my sympathies... But great to learn that the DR upgrade and service worked for you. It’s horrible to spend a big chunk of monies — and then there’s only disappointment.

That's great news that a 300 can be turned round so quickly and with good results

Hope it lives up to your expectations... I'm sure it will

Feed your TV sound into your Naim and you can let Eastenders etc help to run it in.....

That sounds like absolute torture to me, I would rather listen to hundreds of hours of my system running in than a single episode of that drivel!

I'm with you completely but @Roog is wanting to get sone hours on the clock on his newly DR'd 300 but can't because  "the boss" is insisting on watching East Enders etc in the same room, so my suggestion relates only to that scenario!

Cancel the TV Licence

Most common phrase in Eastenders - "What's all the shaaaaaaarting abaaaaaart?"

I am a patient soul, and I can wait a while.

Like many of us I don't benefit from a separate and sealed listening room so I shall pick my moments :0)

Getting back to the effects of the service and DR upgrade, i do wonder how much of the improvement is down to the service and how much the DR?

I don't suppose I have ever listened quite so critically to my previous far eastern HiFi components to know how age affected them, I do however believe that my pre owned NAP 300 was well off the boil when i took it on. I wonder if Naim systems are particularly susceptible/sensitive to the effects of ageing?

Any way this is supposed to be a joyful post and I am now very happy with my NAP 300, and i am looking forward to many years of lovely sounds!

I just wanted to add that the cost of acquiring a pre-owned unit plus the service and DR upgrade seems a reasonably cost effective way of acquiring a NAP 300DR and that it was a significant benefit to me that I was able to do it in two relatively manageable cost lumps.

I've probably missed this on other threads, but how old was your 300?

2005, in my view not very old.

Naim Technical were very sensible, they said that it might just be in need of a service, (on the cusp perhaps) but I got the impression that they didn't like to push people into expensive upgrades which has to be a good thing.
