Hi All,
I sent an email to Naim, but there was no reply, so i think post it here might help.
I want to upgrade my SN2 with Hicap, but i am concern about what happened in the past. let me describe the problem I have.
I made a stupid mistake when my SN2 got electric hum, came to know that by using wire to link the screw at the bottom of the amp to any of source socket, but the hum still there, so I remove the cover of pre-amp out and power amp in, and place the wire there, suddenly a loud sound out from speaker, then it went completely silent.
I could any Naim dealers in China to do the repairs , so I send to a electrician, he found the problem eventually, it was due a part on board ( rectanglea black color part) that caused the electric power going through, so he removed it and replaced with stock part and solder it, everything back to normal again. But he also found a small piece of thing (around 1.5cm) taken out from pre-amp out terminal. Now I concern if I connect to Hicap, will it cause any problems or any improvement.
I don’t have the luxury to borrow or test the unit, I can only buy it, if I want to try.
Hope someone can give me an advise, thank you.
Kwan

Hi Kwan,
Unfortunately your description of a ‘small piece of thing’ suggests something has been displaced.... just what though is a complete guess.
Therefore impossible to advise on your question.
I can only suggest try contacting Naim again.... I’m sure they will provide good advice as to the way forward....
alternatively other service companies are available...

Thanks for your replied.
Sorry, i do not know how to insert picture into this forum.
In China, it is difficult to find such service company (at least in the city I live not come across any), mostly are general electriian do all kind electrical repair work.

Kwan - whilst the amp is now 'fixed' and working, it's hard to tell from your description what work was done and what was damaged (I suspect you may have grounded the 24v rail). I would try and speak to Naim support again and seek their advice as it would be good to get it looked at by a Naim authorised service centre. They can make sure nothing else was damaged or any internal wiring was modified which could cause issues if you were to add a Hicap to the SN2.

Below is the link of the picture. Hopefully you can see it.
Red circle was item taken out and replaced with normal part and solder it. Yellow circle is where the small black piece was picked up. Other than that the electrian did not touch other parts.

Hi James, it is very kind of you, I do not know any Naim authorized service centre in Shanghai, but i do know there is one Hong Kong, but it is impossible to send my amp to Hong Kong for repair.
Thanks
Kwan

This looks very much like work done outside the rules of discussion on this forum ...
It would be best to send it back to naim for a complete service and correct repairs

Hi James,
Nothing was done to the pre power link, when the electrician checked the electric current on pre power link, he found a small broken piece from the socket.
it happens three months ago, since then I never encountered any problems, its sound the same as before.

Ok Kwan - well given your circumstances with regarding getting it to a Naim service centre - it sounds like it's working to your satisfaction so let's assume all is ok...
Remember if you do add a Hicap, then the DR version is the one you need. The SN2 already has a single DR module in it providing a single 24v rail to the pre-amp stage from it's internal power supply. Adding a Hicap DR bypasses this and provides two 24v rails to feed the pre-amp stage. You'll also need a SNAIC5 (this comes with the Hicap) and a SNAIC 4 to connect the Hicap to the SN2.
Good luck
James
