Scratched CD, best remedy?

Posted by: ursus262 on 22 November 2018

Good evening all

I have a CD that has a noticeable deep scratch close to the outer edge.  Unsurprisingly I can't play most of the last track on the album.  Does anyone have any tip for remedying this?

Very unfortunate,  best to just Bin it and buy a replacement

I have had some success with a Dremel drill with a cotton polish mop and tooth paste or T cut

You don't have to get all the scratch out and a perfect shine ... Just have to make it readable for the Lazer

Car polish (not wax.) rub on gently, then wipe off.

Toothpaste and a toothbrush (The  paste is slightly abrasive - you can apply with a finger).

Brasso and a cloth

Mobile phone screen scratch remover

There used to be a varient of the above available as "CD Rescue" kits,  usually with some osrt of rotary contraption to apply it.

I've had sucess with the first 3. Destroyed a couple of CDs with the 4th - put far more grooves on than scratches that were already there.

This is like reading old granny wisdom for making it rain before harvest.

There are CD repair kits. The proper ones use 3 chemicals and 3 cloths. First strips the hard outer enamel. Second cements over the scratches. Third reapplies a hard coating. Don't bother with half baked home remedies.

Even better solution is to rip it and go to streaming. A good drive may be able to get an accurate read where a CD player fails.

+1 for polishing the scratched area of the CD with Brasso. I've fixed several by doing this. Nothing to lose if the CD can't be played anyway!

Another for Brasso. Always apply from the inside outwards. Never in a circle.

If it’s not too exotic, probably much less hassle to buy another one used from ebay, the river, musicmagpie or wherever.

If you have a CD writer try making a copy of the original CD.  With luck the drive in your computer will be able to read it sucecssfull after a numbe rof retries.

As Trickydickie said but use Exact Audio Copy, it's free and will try to fill in any damaged 'bit's'. Rich

Thank you for your responses and advice, most of which were very helpful

I'm going to try out some of the remedies this weekend.  Wish me luck!
