What happened to Cyrus? (Following on from the Linn thread)

Hi all

as per the title.

I personally have no experience of Cyrus but in my younger days when I used to buy many hifi magazines, they seemed a fairly big player and appeared to follow a similar path to Naim with PSU’s for upgrades and the like.

But obviously now I don’t hear there name mentioned really at all.

Compared to naim, they lack the prat but compensate with a much lower noise floor and higher resolution. However, cyrus has a much leaner bass output, so it works like magic with bass heavy speakers and because the sound can sound clinical at times, its best partnered with silk dome equipped speakers.

I also combined naim and cyrus together to good effect (272+xpower).

Certainly I remember the Cyrus 2 and Cyrus 3 integrateds very fondly. There is something so right about the shoebox form factor and Cyrus went all in with it. It lets you build a proper separates system with (if you find the right narrow rack) the footprint close to an all-in-one. I'd really like to see Naim reaffirm their commitment to this form factor too. After the v1 inevitably vanishes, the future of the NAP100 and even the HiCap seem worrying.

They have a real problem with dealer distribution. Hardly any in the UK and almost none abroad. And yet back in the 90s, at the dealer I worked at, everyone had very high regard for Cyrus but the thought of stocking them never crossed our minds. Despite stocking Mission speakers that they were affiliated with back then.

I'd love to see Cyrus have a resurgence. I think introducing the millennial spacially challenged to real hifi via ultra compact separates like Cyrus is, to me, preferable to all-in-one players in some ways.

I take the point of the thread but it's a classic example of by not saying what you mean to start with, you then have to say it fifteen times later.

I'd like to bang the CD mech issue on the head. Cyrus made a huge investment in a new CD reading mech for the usual reasons (unavailability), and the earliest iterations were prone to problems reading discs (though sounded v good). From my experience the latest ones (CDt, CDt signature and CDi are the only players they make currently) have thoroughly resolved this - I've had a CDt as my main CD transport for the past two plus years and I've heard more off my CDs than I ever did with a CDX2 etc. No playing issues at all.

All these companies work well within the framework of a strong dealer network (Audio T, Sevenoaks, others) and website information. The mags are a thing of the past, really.

.... still not sure what the ultimate point is and conclusion?

Surely that is now answered - they are alive and well and well respected, just maybe not as well represented in HiFi dealerships as they were once,

Indeed, nostalgia was much better in the good old days.

Perhaps the lack of visibility is more about there being so few hifi dealers now, and its not just a Cyrus thing.

If there can still be said to be a 'mainstream' hifi industry now, then looking at that you would see lots of reference to, or visibility of Cyrus. Their ONE amp has been pretty successful and their stuff is very high profile in WHF. Which, regardless of what you think about the qualities of that magazine, is what drives sales in the bigger hifi chains such as Audio T and Richer Sounds.

Cyrus is very provincial compared to other brands. They have an extremely low number of non UK distributors and don't operate in any non 230v regions.

They don't even seem to be making an effort sadly. Despite making very decent stuff that is well engineered and built to last.

They are still around. Their patent company, Audyus, post accounts. Looks like they had £1.9m turnover in 2015 and £2.4m in 2014. Both years made a loss on paper

Hmm. GBP 2 mil is not going to cover even the cost of a small workforce, let alone other overheads. Unless things change, and if those numbers are true, they've had it.

To put it into context Naims turnover was £27m with a profit of £1m for 2017, a growth from 2016.

People who like their stuff had better get buying then!

I guess a word of caution on the accounts as that is the patent company. They may stash the cash elsewhere.

He unified Persia under one ruler and freed it from domination by Media, by splitting and conquering the Median Empire.  He then expanded the Persian empire to cove most of the near and middle east.

He was noted for his wisdom in action and for leaving the existing ruling and governmental structures in place within conquered lands. He put a Satrap in control to direct the vassal state by imposing Persian law in their dealings with other states, but leaving local matters in local hands.  States so conquered in fact universally prospered under Cyrus's regime.

He's reputed to have died in battle (but given his age at the time, this seems unlikely).
