What was/is your Job/Career?

As per the title and for those of you retired do you miss it?

I will start by saying I am currrenty still working and will be for many years yet unless I win the big one.

I have my own Plumbing and Heating company but specialise in Heating. It’s just me now but had two other engineers but got fed up with the agro and decided to go back on my own.

Cheers

Returned earlier from 2 x NYE parties, and then had the absolute pleasure of boy #2 playing Wish You Were Here note for note after I stuck it on on the Muso soon after we got back. Hifi? Fill your boots with talk of sound stages and bass response etc. I’ll stick with the youth in the corner doing it how it should be done thanks.

Nice family moment indeed I can appreciate that. Why it has to be used to denigrate someone else’s interests, I don’t get.

I’ve just finished listening to a “Thinking Allowed” podcast on identity.

covering goths, football fans and the transience of identity. It is surely better to concentrate on the things that we can share, rather than take swipes at others.

If ChrisR had come back from 2 NYE parties he may have been 'well oiled' and just made a reflective post, perhaps not even meant for this thread.  I know I post things after a few glasses (or without) at times just because they seem important to me - a bit self-indulgent really and perhaps more suited to a blog, but I know I do so.

Perhaps in the spirit of a peaceful new year, Richard could do a bit of thread pruning ? The jokes are amusing but the sniping less so...

I see Don has started another Brexit thread so maybe that can accommodate some spleen venting

Happy New Year.

Happy New Year.

There's been a surprising amount of sniping over the festive period for what seems to me the most trivial of comments and I commented as much on one of the posts. I gather Richard retired the previois Brexit thread as it was becomimg too tangental and toxic, saying he'd give us a break over Christmas & NY. I am reaching the conclusion on the Padded Cell there are people who contribute regularly who seem to court controversy and enjoy the confrontation. Forum anonymity is a perfect mechanism for bravery to some it seems.

I am saddened. This started as a post encouraging members to to tell a little about what they do or did for a living / career. Sadly it has partly turned into an attack on some of the most innocent of comments and has spiralled from there.

I WISH A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL FORAM MEMBERS. If you want controversy there are lots of other far more vitriolic forums to engage with rather than this happy, easy going HiFi forum.

Again I say HAPPY NEW YEAR. Please allow Richard to enjoy it also.

Retired after 42 years in Aviation, all with BA.  One company for my whole working life, quite rare these days !

My early interest in HiFi, gained through music after learning the Trumpet at School, played a large part in me being successful when i applied for a Radio Apprenticeship.

Left school at 16 for an Engineering Apprenticeship with BA.  Then, Radio/Radar Technician, Flight Engineer on Tristars, CoPilot on 737, 747-400. Captain on A319/320/321 and finished on A380.

I don't miss the flying, I do a bit in light aircraft, but maybe the people.

 Still playing Music though !!

I started my Engineering Apprenticeship with BA in 1979 (avionic/electrical).  Worked on Concorde, VC10 and B707s  in TBB and did a stint on B747s in TBJ/K.  I left BA at the end of my apprenticeship as they were privatising the airline and they didn't have any positions in Engineering for us.

I was there in all those hangers at that time on number 2 shift (Radio/Radar) !

I started in Aug 75, we had a 40 year reunion in 2015 and got over 30 people attending.

There are currently plans for a 50 year reunion of '79 intake, its on a facebook page, PM me if you cant find it.

Indeed, but I stand by it. Ever since I went to the ND555 demo in the Autumn and was faced with dull men earnestly listening out for every minor detail and difference I think I lost what little interest I may have had in 'true hifi'. Having a system that sounds great is great, but the depth of discussion and obsession on here isn't something I want to be part of.

It was fun, I picked up a few pointers and tips on the way to the 272 + 555PS > 250, but I reckon that's it for me on here. Enjoy the chat, I'm off. Richard feel free to disable / delete my access.

Surely you've just reached a level you personally are quite happy with - you've got a fairly formidable system which might seem bonkers to the vast majority of normal people.

I think there are two aspect to hi-fi - love of good music you personally enjoy (and to hell with everyone else's opinion on it) and a fascination with what technology and good engineering can provide to help us enjoy it.  Individually we may lean more to one facet or the other but without the music the hi-fi kit is not much use to us.

Maybe there's an element here that we're always playing catchup - you fork out thousands or more and then can feel like a minnow in a pond full of fish with considerably more expensive equipment.

Personally don't see the problem - if others seem to be obsessing and they enjoy it where's the harm in that?

Not all shiny here either! My planned early retirement in 2019 is partly to spend time with my wife, who has had a serious health problem twice and, although recovered now, may have a further recurrence down the line which would probably not go well.

I'd like to enjoy retirement together with her rather than leave mine too long and regret it. A little 'seizing of the day' is in order.

Bruce

This is a good plan. I retired 5 years earlier than ideal to spend time with my wife who was older than me and getting slightly frail. We had five great years together until she died, two weeks after my official retirement date. Such a good decision and worth every penny I lost through retiring early.

The career info is interesting - and the mind boggles if one or two are actually true...

If this thread is still running I'll post mine when I retire - all holding up that'll be about 18 months yet, hoping to have a sufficient pot by then to keep us in reasonable comfort and still do some interesting things, while squeezing in the expensive holidays in before then while fit enough and money coming in. So many people I know managed to retire at ages from 50 to 60, but sadly a couple of bad investments, fraud (not by me!) and bad pension advice mean I expect to have worked almost 49 years by the time I retire (tempting to make it 50, but it is a balance of money to do what we want in retirement and making the best of life, old age pension then combining with current work pension to provide reasonable income).

As for a song all together, given that we have just entered a new year, when hopefully Brexit will be cancelled but if not everyone in Britain will need to find a way to cope and to rebuild livelihoods and learn to live together again,  and reflecting the spirit of Christmas recently passed, I suggest:

Everybody has wisdom, everyone understands
Food when we are hungry, the touch of loving hands
No one is anyone’s property, no one should be a slave
The joining of hearts in free will, begins a tidal wave

(Chorus) Don’t hold back, don’t think that hope is pointless
Love is a, love is a, love is a, love is an open door
Don’t believe that life is closed against us
Love is a, love is a, love is a, love is an open door

And it doesn’t make any difference, the colour of anyone’s skin
We need the rejection of prejudice, let peace come flooding in
Jealousy is just a parasite, hatred is disease
Respect for human dignity, become skittering wind blown leaves

(Chorus)

The time is surely coming when we could all be free
When eyes for so long blinded, in opening shall see
That children may grow happily safe in the love of all
The earth a fertile garden where nobody need crawl

(Chorus)

Love is a, love is a, love is an open door

And if it seems that your hoping heart has led you into pain
Take a tip from the carpenter forgive and love again
And again

Happy new year IB, I used Roon and Tidal to find the song you quoted.

We’ll agree to differ on Roon but the sentiments in the song, particularly in light of some of the posts above are very pertinent and relevant.

Spent most of my formative years as a roadie for Bros but was laid off when their star faded. There's been some talk of a comeback show but who'd want to see those tossers?

Then, I was able to use my contacts in the music industry to secure a job at HMV but now they have let me go too.

I think I am going to be alright though because yesterday I went for a community job which involves using a pocket camera to photograph of all things, would you believe it, the bags of dog shit people keep leaving in the country side as there's been lots of people whinging about that. I don't know who though.

Oh well at least I'll have lots of time to think of some jokes for the Naim forum as the existing ones aren't very good.

People get bored over the Christmas period it can't all be ND555's and Kudos Titans you know! Even the Naim forum needs filler.

Yes, they are doing that next month in Staines.  I am looking forward to seeing them all again.  I'm flying down from Manchester and staying nearby.  I retire myself in just over three years' time.  I must say I'm looking forward to it!
