Mu-so Tweaks

Posted by: mackb3 on 29 December 2018

I did search in streaming and MR with no good finds. I picked up a Mu-so to evaluate and looking for advice/experiences to optimize performance. For example, placement, best platform to place upon, position from wall, height from floor. Currently it's on an IKEA Besta cabinet. Sound is very impressive for what it is. DSP can be spooky at times. Looking to wring out as much as possible. It's plugged in to dedicated mains same as my main N rig. Room 14x22 high sloping ceiling 8' to 11' long side. Pile on!

I had Sound Anchor make a stand for me and to my ears it now sounds light years better! Speak with Bernie there. Tell him that Wayne McGinnis sent you to him. They were great to work with.

Pic, please, Wayne

Thanks Wayne. I’ll check them out. Yes, a photo as requested by Gavin would be great. I’m assuming Naim designed muso to sit on surface with a larger footprint but it would make sense that different properties of the material would influence the sound and of course rigidity.

Well I took some pics but how do I post them here?

There are some instructions in the FAQ section.

Ooo, yes, please, I'd love to see some pics!

I bought a Blok Staxx setup which is absolutely superb for the price, but unfortunately too narrow for the Muso.

I did find a dedicated stand for the Muso which looks quite appealing:

Okay I’m headed to work now but but will post tonight.

I saw that stand but the shipping to US was really expensive and I just can’t see how it could be on the same level as Sound Anchor anyway- but maybe i’m Wrong about that.

I think that the Sound Anchor weighs about  125 lbs!

Apparently, I’m an idiot because I can’t figure out how to post the pics from my iPhone.

The stand has a top platform that is smaller than the width of the unit so that the passive radiator and power connect etc. are uncovered.

It has two columns coming down into two horizontal “feet” . It comes with spikes and I also got the coasters for it because I have wooden floors.

It comes pre-filled and is very heavy and apparently only comes in black although they say that you could have it painted etc.

I also bought an Audioquest “Cinnamon” USB to Lightning cable to use with my iPhone and I do think that it has helped some as well. I considered getting the “Carbon” but didn’t. Perhaps I should have but I’m not sure.

I have the unit about two feet out from the wall and have done zero room treatments but I can say that the Muso sounds much , much better now especially in regards to bass.

I’m happy with this setup and am now planning my next move : Atom plus Focal is looking very tempting!

MB, a dedicated stand, while a costly option and not always practical for many, would likely be best from a sound quality point of view.  However, I have found that whatever you use as a support for the Mu-So and Mu-So Qb, whether stand, table, shelf, sideboard, countertop etc.., it's well worth experimenting with the distance between wall and rear of the unit.  Even small 1cm changes can be significant. My usual setup routine is - switch off loudness first.  Then make the broad distance to wall adjustments, both physically and on the app.  Then make the fine adjustments physically.

I use an oak cabinet as a support for my Qb, and I put in a shallow alcove ... I can certainly say it sounds pretty impressive and certainly an enjoyable addition to the house..

I do think the Muso range appear to improve with raising off the ground.. certainly with respect to treble and upper mid detail and clarity.

FWIW.. I connect via an overlapping Wifi AP system, and I have had not one glitch or dropout since owning it... first class product, and great Wifi implementation. Works really well with AirPlay2 and Spotify Connect apps... great product and very user friendly and accessible.

Our Qb sits on the kitchen work top across an open corner. With a little adjustment fore and aft and a 45 degree rakish angle, plus Loudness on, we get superlative sound the length and breadth of the kitchen, no matter what the source, although chef Loki (c'est moi!) benefits most at each workstation

Absolutely no need for a separate support, although now, for fun, I might see what damage the Torlyte shelf does to the sound

Interesting comments and Wayne revealed one I was wondering about regarding the ports out of the way of a support top but exposed like a box speaker port. I've got a few options with which to experiment such as an old Sound Organisation two shelf table (remember those flat earth days) and some higher mass tables. I do have a small shop (maker space)  and some wood stock that I could go custom for cheap. Maybe some will share on the 2019 system photos thread. It's an interesting product especially for the money. I'll share what I experience.

Wayne, to upload photo's one has to upload the photo's to a service like PhotBucket etc and share the link. Still would like to see the SA solution as it sounds very unique.

Do any of you guys use Dropbox? I’m already paying for that and it should work right?

Posted on: 01 January 2019 by mackb3

Wayne, yes on DropBox. Just right click and select "copy image location" and paste in the source box after clicking on the little icon in the header of the reply box (little mountain box) as Richard describes in the FAQ's description. Works as my test below. Cool.

I used Michell Tenderfeet i had, I thought it was more a placebo. I found the beauty of the Muso was chuck it anywhere, no real tweaks and fine.

I think that I messed up two of the posts.
