Uniti Star & Synology NAS drive

Posted by: Tricky Dicky on 03 January 2019

Hello

Having recently relocated I am now able to set up a system and store to a NAS drive with the intent of getting the most from my UnitiStar. I purchased a Synology DS 218j NAS drive last year, but haven't used it as yet.. Initial attempts at ripping CDs and uploading music files to the NAS drive are proving to be frustrating.

So, simple question. Can anyone direct me to a 'fools guide' to setting up a system with a NAS drive server..?

Many thanks

Richard

I don't have any knowledge of the Uniti Star per se. But in terms of setting up a Synology DS 218J NAS (which I did last year) here are a few clips that made life a lot easier for me.

Part 1    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmHjlX0KNXA

 Part 2    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4ZPFi3VR8g

BUT be aware that the set-up process for the Synology in these clips (and luckily what I wanted to do) is JBOD - hopefully you're familar with JBOD and RAID and a back-up regime 'cause it is the most important aspect of setting up the NAS.

I suspect your frustration is more related to the Star association with the Synology,  & I have no experience on that,  so here's hoping someone with the experience checks in.

I found the Synology side remarkably easy,  it was 2014 when I first got my Synology & 2 weeks before my NDX arrived.  I first ran the Synology install disc,  then I ripped CD's straight from my laptop DVD drive into the Synology.  Using dBpoweramp software I had ripped around 300 before the NDX arrived & I could check what I had done.  It all worked out just fine only requiring minor metadata & other editing on just a few albums.

I don't think you'll find a single guide that will tell you everything you need to know. Presumably you are ripping CDs on the Star, in which case you will need to save them on a USB drive, then connect that to a computer (or maybe directly to the NAS) and copy the files to the NAS.

Have you managed to log into the NAS on a PC or Mac so that you can set it up? You'll need to create a music folder and use the computer to transfer CD rips and downloads to it. Then instal MinimServer on the NAS, or use the Synology media server, so that the Star can access the music folder.

I should have added to my previous post to ask your dealer.  Naim dealers should either carry out the installation for you or advise you on the process if you ask for it.
